Default California State Colleges want to raise Tuition by 9%

Does anybody else's state have state colleges/university systems that are living in la-la land like this? A down economy (or recession if you prefer), a horrendous state budget deficit and the college system recently gave college presidents a huge raise, are in the midst of giving professors a minor raise and now want to raise tuition.

This is why getting an expert opinion about the real world from the academic world is often frustrating and a ridiculous exercise in dumbing yourself down. Grrrr....

California State University considers 9% tuition hike

California State University trustees will vote Wednesday on raising fees by $498, or about 9 percent, for fall 2012. That would bring annual tuition for undergrads at CSU's 23 campuses to $5,970, not including books, room or board. Most campuses charge an additional $1,000 in local fees.

The tuition increase is part of the university's larger plan for its 2012-13 budget. Trustees are also voting Wednesday on a proposal to ask the state for $2.4 billion in funding next year, an increase of $330 million over this year. If all of it comes through, CSU will not implement the tuition hike.

"We won't have to increase tuition for the fall if the state provides adequate funding in next year's budget," Chancellor Charles Reed said this morning in a phone call with reporters.
Universities make budget requests to the state every year but it's been many years since they received anything close to what they requested. For the current year, the state cut both CSU and University of California by $650 million. The state will cut the two systems by another $100 million each next month if mid-year budget projections are not met. A $750 million cut would translate to a 27 percent drop in funding for CSU compared with last year, Reed said.

Read CSU's tuition proposal on page 20 of the meeting agenda posted here.

Remember when California had free college? of course I believe property taxes paid for it back then, I guess you can't get it all, either low taxes and higher tuition, or taxes and free college? hmmm....

I'm all for higher tuition. Public colleges students nationwide pay less than half of the actual cost of their education (taxpayers foot up to 80% in many cases, not including scholarships and grants).

Not to mention that a large number of college students are unprepared for college-level work, and furthermore maintain an entitlement mentality in which they believe they are paying for a degree, as opposed to paying for the opportunity to earn one. I think weeding out the punks would be a good thing for our education systems and the nation as a whole. Nothing drags down the economy like a bunch of college-educated workers who 1) don't know much and 2) expect a paycheck just for showing up day to day.

Having said that, the amount of waste at various public colleges is absurd, and that includes the ridiculous pay and benefits of administrators. Every man for himself is the norm of higher education.

There is an issue when healthcare cost rise but silence on the left when higher education rise faster.

A couple of universities in Colorado raised their tuition rates this fall as well. State revenues are down, yet initiatives such as the one to provide free or reduced tuition for illegal aliens thrive in such locales.

Cool

It appears that tuition there is somewhat less than it is here.

1+

They always seem to have a master plan here of some kind( Hs ,college etc & it ussally means ways they can think up to spend a lot more moneys( much of it wastefull spending imo)- just built 2 hschools pretty recently in town & this project)and if i read it right the local story right these schools by state law required 10% of all building funds be used for art($900,000.00 for those 2 HS,s art(tile murals etc i think.

97 million for this projectCasper College Foundation campaigns for master plan ( there comming up a little short on funds i guess, they raised the propery mill ;levy etc also to build that one.

My grandkids in public schools have a bit of fun( and take it for granted the costs etc involved) online etc with the apple laptops they get to take home that the schools give them( bet they cost a bit more then this pc im on)

...I propose a 20% hike in the tuition in Kalifornia....why not ? Let's do this as a tax on the students ! Take that 20% and give it to the demokrats so they can hand it over to the unions and their buddies.... Can't afford it ? Sure ! Raise the property taxes. Raise the state income taxes too and remove the deductions for college students and such. I think it's a wonderful idea, to give the little scumbags a lesson in how economics works. I think it's hilarious how the professors condemn capitalism and preach the destruction of our country yet decide they need to make more money so those long summer vacations can be more enjoyable...hahahahah
