Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

I'm tired of the union bashing, not all unions are the same. I'm union, had to join when I hired in. There are no lobbyist for us, tax payers don't pay anything for us, either you buy our services or go elsewhere. All we have is an agreement between workers and employer.I'm all in for some regulation on unions payed for by taxes, but thats not most unions.

Well for the most part, most unions are the same. I've worked with a lot of great union guys. However, when you join a union, you quit being an individual. You become a collective. That leads to a slower changing business model in a time when technology changes pretty much daily. I like being an individual working and negotiating for myself and in my best interest. With that comes the acceptance I can be fired tomorrow for no reason at all.

I don't mind being union, as I will need to join to get the job that I am in the process of obtaining.
However, if things don't work out, I will exercise the ability to walk away at a moments notice. That is one thing that the union cannot negotiate.

Union tactics are your worst enemy. I held no opinion of unions until Wisconsin went viral. I and many others do not approve of the tactics used by teachers and other public sector union members. I realize not all union members participated, but I'm beginning to question all unions now.
Just my take.

My main objection is with public sector unions, as they cost 'The People' money they can ill-afford to spend, to keep others at a higher standard of living than those paying the bill ! Private sector unions....well....pros and cons aside, they're between the membership and the employer. Members can quit, employers can go non-union...they don't cost the public anything (unless the expense of hiring union labor drives up the cost of goods and services, making private enterprise less competitive) so I don't have an opinion unless they decide to support public sector unions in their games..then I would oppose them.

Unions served a purpose +50 yrs ago,
Today thanks to unions we have host of regulations dicating workplace safety environment.
Hence little to no need for unions in most industries.
Today unions have very little safety issues to focus on, instead can only. Promote their need by demanding more $$$$$.
No need for such things as doorman union, any clerical workers union and so on.
I also object to as you stated had to join the union to obtain the job.
having to join any group, org for a job should be illegal and one of the sticking points in the wisconsin fiasco.

They have a right to make you join a Union if you want a job (depending on the sate that you live\work in).
You also have a right to not apply for that position if you don't want to ( I knew going into the interview that this was going to be a Union position).
I have ulterior motives for my joining the union.
Its the Teamsters, and I'm hoping to be able to get training through them for a Class-A CDL.
I already have a B CDL, but have limited resources to obtain the A. Joining the union is one way to get it, without having to pay large amounts of money, to get the increased education and licensing.
A side benefit is that in will in large part be PAID training, and that makes it a good move for me and my family. As my family is priority one, who I work for is second to that always.

s. il. hntr. has a point--Not all unions are alike. Pretty much all of the union activity you see in the news involves large unions, such as Teamsters, SEIU, state or national size unions, etc. There are many smaller unions or chapters of unions that serve a useful purpose on the local city or county levels. In some professions, you are not legally allowed to have a union (unions have the legal right to strike) so those employee groups have associations which do not have a legal right to strike.

There is a lot of thuggery and corruption that exists in many of the large unions. There's no doubt about that--just read any newspaper, political website, etc. and you can easily find evidence of that. IMHO, such thuggery and corruption should land people in jail.

Sometimes you find such abuses in smaller unions but generally not. Most smaller unions and associations have less than a few hundred members and everybody knows everybody else.

I am pro union on the local level. get to know my bosses, and you'll see why.

But the state and national level activism of unions, the evolution of union+democrap+organized crime... I just hate it.
