Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Some facts regarding poverty in America

Here are some facts and why we really don't have real poverty here.

This is well worth reading and should be mandatory reading for every citizen. I suppose the moderators cannot require members here to read it, but we should all read it.

I know I've mentioned before that we received subsidized housing, food stamps and subsidized day care, until my mother turned 18 and was able to get a job waitressing in a bar.

But she, and I, still do not understand why we should have been placed in a nice townhouse with air conditioning subsidized by the public. When you read this article, keep in mind that much of the good living enjoyed by those in poverty is actually paid for by the taxpayers.

been to places in the caribbean where 'POOR' means no shoes, dirt floors, no windows and corrugated sheet metal for a roof. If they're lucky, a curtain over the front entry (no door, just an entryway), and you share your home with whatever happens to wander in on two or four legs. IN other places, there are 'NO SQUATTERS' signs where poor homeless will construct makeshift shelters on the beach from flotsam and jetsam. Belts of rope, shirtless in many cases...THIS is poverty. Not a fat one among them. They forage in the jungle for g'nipa, and dive on the reefs for lobsters to sell to the tourists to raise much-needed cash.

When you see fat 'inner city' people chowing down in Mickey-Dee's, wearing the Target and/or Wal-Mart sale items and sporting smart-phones and new sneakers...well...it just ticks me off to know that somewhere in government there's a complete moron who mistakes what we have here, for poverty. The vast majority of what they call 'The Poor" are not poor, and that's a fact.

And the kids all have cell phones and wear $100+ sneakers.

It's not right that mama worked six nights a week, at least eight hours a night, and had to pay taxes to support these lazy trash.

Sorry if I sound bitter and unsympathetic. I know people can run into a rough time for a while. It happened to us and we are grateful for the help. (Of course, I was too young at the time to know what was going on.)

But gee, shouldn't people's life plan include gettting a job?

I too have traveled quite a bit throughout the Caribbean and saw the same things. Most islands are the same with the best jobs being a gardener or housekeeper in one of the resorts. Drinking water comes off the roof and is collected in barrels. Not sure where the food comes from but there aren’t an abundance of dogs and cats around. I have seen some scenes in US inner cities that many people do not ever see. No fat kids running around with designer sneakers listening to rap music. Shotgun type houses lines up along a back street with most windows boarded up. The houses are so close together that there is no yard. Just house after house and all are in shambles. Kids live with either a grand parent or one of their parents. Most adults are in jail or dead so the kids get passed back and forth between relatives that have been released. It appeared to me that many probably don’t get access to any social programs like food stamps and housing allowance since they appear to be isolated by their lifestyle and location. I may be wrong but it seemed like they lived in a 3rd world country surrounded by the unmarked social boundary that prevented them from ever leaving. The kids I saw in the school my daughter taught at didn’t have shoes that were appropriate for kids. They were often unmatched and obviously didn’t fit. Seeing a kindergarten kid show up for school with worn out hiking type shoes 3 sizes too large and full of holes was an eye opener. These kids were all skinny as a rail and seemed to just want to fight with each other. Getting them to even attend school was a chore and their parents or caregivers didn’t help. The only positive I can see from Katrina was it got my daughter out of that hell hole…..and I got Fannymae the wonder dog.

There is no denying there is true poverty in this country. I'm not a socialist, but I do believe that the greatest nation in the history of the world should be able to provide some sort of a subsistence 'safety net' for true poverty. I would say that we could EASILY take that percentage of the population and quarter it, keeping the last 1/4 as being the truly poverty stricken and needing all the help that can be mustered. The other 3/4 of the 'poor'....well.....they're not really poor, are they ? They're just dependent; dependent on a system set up by democrats, FOR democrat consolidation of power. End it.

I agree. Far too many of the poor are that way because that is the way they chose to live. The disturbing part of what I saw in inner city NOLA was that society seemed so isolated from other parts of the city even though there were no fences or other obstructions to intermingling. I had the sense that the kids who grew up there lived and died there and didn’t leave. These were the people that Ray Nagin said couldn’t leave NOLA on their own. No cars, little information and really no way to get out other than to have someone go there and tell them they had to get on a bus. Lots of those houses didn’t have electricity and no TV or radio. Those kids my daughter taught wanted to touch her hair because they had never felt hair that wasn’t coarse. They said it was like pet hair. Just a few blocks away was a major 4 lane road and then the garden district took over with nice homes and rich people. Very strange situation. My daughter actually felt like a peace corps volunteer rather than a teacher.

It is a good article with several interesting statistics. I found the below stats to be especially interesting.

Quote:
Although the mainstream media broadcast alarming stories about widespread and severe hunger in the nation, in reality, most of the poor do not experience hunger or food shortages. The U.S. Department of Agriculture collects data on these topics in its household food security survey. For 2009, the survey showed:
  • 96 percent of poor parents stated that their children were never hungry at any time during the year because they could not afford food.
  • 83 percent of poor families reported having enough food to eat.
  • 82 percent of poor adults reported never being hungry at any time in the prior year due to lack of money for food.
