Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default What Ever Happened...

...to "acid rain"? That used to be the big enviro-scare, it was going to be the end of life on Earth as we knew it, yadda yadda yadda....haven't heard the term in quite a while now. 'Course I never saw any such thing here in MS, but used to hear it on the news a lot.

There are lots of affects around here. Rain seeded with emissions from mid western coal plants raise the acid level on many small lakes especially the higher altitude ones in the Adirondacks. The weather patterns go from west to east resulting in our acid rain. Since the 90's emissions have been cut back through technology and some are hoping the lakes will return to normal. First thing noticed is the dying of fish. After the lake gets too acidic then it doesn’t support plant or fish/ animal life. Sterile and clear waters are what is ended up with.

Many of the trout streams i fished in WV and VA are long dead from acid rain. Not one living thing in them. The ph of those streams is in the area of 4.4-4.9.

A lot of the damage to streams in WV comes from the mining of coal as well as the burning of it and some mountain streams have been lost altogether due to mountaintop removal. Liming stations have been installed on some trout streams to raise the PH.

In 1997 and 1998 i managed an explosive ordnance cleanup job in the Dolly Sods Wilderness and Dolly Sods North. Red Creek was very pretty and totally devoid of life from acid rain. The WV DNR wanted to put a liming station on Red Creek in the wilderness so the stream could be stocked with trout but the federal gov't would not allow it.
