First off, none of the people were my "peers". I was the only white professional in the bunch. Most of them were losers were crappy jobs.
Any how I got selected for a jury. They had some Indian guy who wasn't even a citizen suing a white guy because of an auto accident.
They asked the jury if anybody could give an impartial verdict. I raised my hand and said no.
I started a rather lengthy monologue and here is some of what I said:
1] I hate trial lawyers and consider them the lowest form of life on earth. Edwards the recently indicted presidential candidate was a trial lawyer made a fortune on bogus lawsuits. (I went on a tirade about Edwards).
2] I would never find with the plaintiff because he wasn't even an American and that if a person is not a citizen, they aren't not accorded any rights in the Constitution. I then mentioned Guantanamo and stated that they could never hold an American citizen there.
3] Third I would never side with the plaintiff because I believe that these BS lawsuits are destroying the country.
4] Fourth I would never side with the plaintiff because I did not like the way he looked. I seriously did not like the way he looked. He looked like a shyster piece of crap.
I was not selected to participate in the trial. I got some odd looks and comments when we left the room and I noticed that the other jurors avoided me. Tomorrow I get to do the whole thing again. At least I was honest. The other people lied about their biases in my opinion.

What is beneath comment? Frivolous lawsuits are at the heart of the insurance costs that have skyrocketed over the last twenty years.
HD is correct in stating that most nations would not allow this type of frivolous lawsuit to reach court if the party seeking compensation was not a member of that nation. The Constitution protects rights for Americans, and no one else. I don't believe in equal rights for everyone. Nor did the framers of the Constitution or they would have granted the same rights to foreigners.
Some current, and former, politicians have enacted laws specifically dealing with illegal aliens supporting my argument. It's only recently that liberal politicians have been trying to give foreign nationals the same rights as US citizens. That disgusts me. If they want the rights of an American, then they can become US citizens like my Great Grandparents did. They came here legally from the Czech Republic at the turn of the 20th century. I have no respect for people that come here illegally and want what they are not entitled to. That starts with health care, education, driving licenses, and now the right to vote in some places.
Granted, item 4 was out of line, but the other points are accurate.
Honestly, I've sat on juries, and the insanity of the legal system makes me sad. I've been on one civil, and one criminal trial. It's something I had to do, but hated every minute of the time I spent doing that because the lunacy of the situations I had to hear about and decide on.
I helped convict one felon of his 27th felony (the lesser convictions were numerous too). The guy also was a wife beater. If anyone thinks that someone like that should be anywhere but six feet under, you are misguided.
The civil trial involved a family affair. They used a large tract of property to swindle others out of their property, and to get loans against that property only to default/sell what they got. Real shining beacons of leeches.
To say that my time, and the time of everyone else who was involved, was wasted would be an understatement.

it was an auto accident and certainly the courts are where this belongs. Where else should this guy go?
Wow, why am I not surprised by the comments made from these 2 individuals on HNI?

I have never been selected to sit on a jury. I take my summons, go sit in the bullpen, and then get told I can go home.
I do not know the facts in the case. My own view would be that once the law was explained to me and I had heard the facts, I could make as good a judgment on such an issue as anyone. I would also say that I would not necessarily be constrained by the "explanation" of the law that would be dished out to me.
Having said that, I assume that a person who is legally in this country -- whether on an H1B visa or just temporarily visiting -- does have some rights. For example, if someone wrongfully smacks into your vehicle, they might owe you some damages, even if you're not a US citizen. I acknowledge this kind of matter is very fact specific.
Personally I would have viewed this as an opportunity to make democracy work. I would have done my best to influence the thinking of the remainder of the jury so they would stay on track, rely on facts not suppositions, use their brain rather than allow themselves to be manipulated by lawyers -- either the plaintiff's lawyer or the defendent's lawyer. Our system cannot work if people are not sincere and put forth a good effort. I also personally don't think the system can work if elites unplug themselves from participating. By the way, my use of the term 'elite' here is not in anyway a pejorative. It implies those who have received -- for whatever reason -- a better education, a better upbringing, a better standard of living.
Come on folks... HockeyDunce is posting what he THINKS conservatives would do/believe, but, of course, he is wrong on all counts. I suspect most conservatives, though, take jury duty as a serious civic duty. HD: You should spend less time at the HuffingtonPost and the DailyKOS...

For some strange reason I haven't been picked for jury duty. I live in a very small town with few potential people to choose from so that in itself makes it rather odd. I did once get a jury survey which I completed and mailed back and never got summoned. I have to say that I am not sure after answering questions with my conscience if I would ever get picked. I am usually pretty outspoken and say my peace which a few of you can attest to. I too hate the fact that there are so many spurious lawsuits which do nothing other than clog the court calendar and make all the lawyers fat. The county court is in my town and during the recess you can see all the tattooed losers out on the walk smoking their butts probably bought with food stamps. Like I said I wouldn’t be a good juror.
