Default Biden charges secret service rent.

Hillary has been paying for her house in NY since they left the white house this way. Does it surprise you?

HD, I didn't think Hillary was ever VP. Did I miss something? Since when is it capitalism to have government pay for your mortgage? Loops, my bad, that's Obama at work.

Well, he's REQUIRED to have Ss protection...and technically, providing that to the VP is THEIR problem....and I don't really see a problem with charging the government for the use of the facilities. It is hypocritical ?? You bet ! Did he pay taxes on that 13k ?

As long as he's not getting more than FMV for it, I don't have a problem with this. If not renting the guest house, the Secret Service would have to rent another location nearby. He wouldn't have had to pay the taxes on it, YET. The income is from this year, so, taxes will be due by April 15, 2012.

According to the article, the Bidens' reported $11,000 in rental income in 2010. Depending on the time frame over which that income was earned, this raises a concern that the government is being charged more than FMV.

Depends on how the numbers work, doesn't it? i.e. How much was the place purchased for? How much was put down? What were the financing terms? What's the rental market like? It is possible to buy a place with two houses on it and receive enough rent from one of the houses to pay the entire mortgage... The Clintons' get SS protection for life. As long as they're getting FMV in rent, then, again, I don't see the problem. If, however, the FMV is $2,000 per month, and they're charging the government $10,000 rent per month or $2,001 per month, then there's a problem...

HockyPuck, I guess you’re okay with your favorite politicians making money so long as they are not Oil Company or any other major corporation. Talk about being a major hypocrite!

Ipsc, it been a very long time since the stories broke. The home in NY was 100% financed by a Democrat. They built a guests house for the SS and by chance, the mortgage equaled the SS rent.

I would prefer the SS get a major discount at best if living on the property of the person being protected, otherwise live on a piece of property unrelated. Too much funny business. Is Bush doing this hanky panky?

According to Snopes, this is false. The rent is standard procedure, it is based on a government formula, not at the whim of the politician, the amounts paid to the Clintons is nowhere close to what their mortgage is, and, although it's been tendered, the Clintons have not accepted ANY rent.

I'm certainly no fan of the Clintons, but...

Sorry IPSC but I don't see where they back it up that it's false. Snipes isn't high on my list of respectable sites. I tKe them like any other site. I don't see where I can back up their references. In fact, Washington Post ref send up the big caution flag to me.

Do you have any references that "back it up" that they ARE receiving rent equal to their mortgage payment?
