Smile Let's have a real debate...

Honorable Husband, who is a CPA, although inactive or non-practicing or whatever, as well as a lawyer, keeps telling me that the reason American industry grew to world domination is because it used to be run by engineers and salesmen. He claims American industry is now failing because it is run by administrators and accountants.

He claims that we could revive American industry by simply firing everyone with an MBA and turning the control back to the engineers and salesmen, not necessarily in that order.

What do you guys think?

He left out the fact the world's industrial nations were destroyed by war and required rebuilding while we had our not only intact but fully staffed with experienced workers.

Stick with what's happening here in the U.S. He's only commenting on what is happening here.

But your answer has nothing to do with the question, namely, if the management scheme were changed would American industry be more competitive?

Money is like water, it seeks the path of least resistance. Throw-up roadblocks (unions, government regulation, etc) that make it expensive to build in one place and money will go to a place where it is less expensive. The "administrators and accountants" are just looking for ways to decrease costs. National borders do not fit in to the equation. Capitalism is not about patriotism it is about making money. If something can be made cheaper in China that meets American standards (IE: Underwriters Laboratories or "UL")then it will be made in China. Remove what drives up costs in this country and things will be made here. It is that simple.

You aren't responding to the question either. Why not?

sachiko,

Well...This ought to be good as I'm both an engineer with a MBA.

I think your husband it alluding to squelched entrepreneurship and is seeing a symtom rather than the disease. I don't think its a problem with MBAs - They get hired out of school in these large companies and their entrepreneurship gets squelched!

So what's the root cause? I think its the increase in government control/interference in all aspects of the manufacturing business!

Gov't is increasingly into control of company/employees relations re: SS, retirement, taxes, safety, sex harassment, equal opportunity, unions, arbitrators, ect. They are increasingly restrictive on environmental regulations (as example of the red tape this administration has "under the radar" put on current oil drilling and exploration. Plus control of import/export regulations. Plus travel and transportation - TSA. Plus control of food/drugs - FDA. Plus business loans, mortgages, banking and finance. Plus encourage product liability and employee lawsuits. I'm sure I've missed a bunch, but think you get the picture.

BTW - Your hubby maybe be a good one to comment on the latter.

Many can and will argue anyone of these controls that because of the actions of "a bad apple" or "the straw that broke the camels back" these gov't regulations are "NEEDED". I don't see the gov't acting for the good of the people - They just never waste a crisis to gain more political power, votes and influence. The gov't control and interference is the biggest most influential change in manufacturing businesses in our life time!

Its the ROOT CAUSE of the ACTIONS of corporate lawyers, accountants, business administrators, engineers, salesmen, employees, etc.

So you were an engineer and then got an MBA, becoming, what my man would say, part of the problem.

Do you ever have feelings of guilt for having gone over to the dark side?

I'll be the first to say that I am by no means an expert on this. I'm merely a man with a high school diploma with 48 years of life as my higher education.

That being said the view from here says that your husbands solution is much to simple. What others have already said here points out that the problems in this country are much more complicated.

One could argue that logic "is" simple, but lets face it, much of whats happening in this country today defies logic!!!
