Default Bear Attacks and killes hiker... warden lets it live.

In one of the crazier decisions I have heard of, a mother bear attacks and kills a hiker and park rangers allow it to live. I couldn't disagree more with the decision. That bear now knows how weak and defenseless humans are. There is a possibility of it attacking again. If so, the park service will be sued for millions of dollars for allowing a known man killer to live. Who is going to feel safe hiking in that area now?

I think you should investigate the situation yourself and report back to us in a month. Good Luck!

Really! You constantly amaze me with you posts and yet all that comes to mind is Kaibab, Wahoo, WillPA or one of many aliases that come here and assumes your spoon fed opinions matter. It has already been reported that the hikers had encountered the bears twice prior to the last one yet chose to continue in the direction of the bears.

Did you actually read the article that you linked? The bear has no history of aggression towards people and obviously didn't see the people as a food source and acted in a purely defensive nature.

If you're going to knowingly go hiking in grizzly bear country while the bears have young cubs don't be surprised if you get attacked by a momma bear protecting her cubs.

Cool

It's sad to know that someone was killed while out on a vacation trip. But what idiot roams around grizzly bear territory without a gun capable of killing a grizzly bear?

"Hey look at the cute bears. Look at that mother bear with her cute little cubs. Hey they're looking our way. Uh oh..."

Well, coming from an area with a history of human and bear interaction, I know that my DNR would have killed the mother, and taken the cubs into custody. The cubs may have gone to a zoo, or been euthanized. They would not be roaming around the woods in Wisconsin. Which is all that matters.

While I agree that the hikers should have been properly prepared to deal with the bear, I also believe the decision to let the bear live is a bad one. Bears are incredibly intelligent and learn from their experiences. The lesson learned here is that people can be killed. It was taught by momma to her cubs which means that those cubs are more dangerous to people now. Not just momma bear.

Think of bears like criminals. They are smart, determined, and can kill without remorse. Well, they are smart enough to be dangerous at any rate.

More importantly, once bears get aggressive towards people, or attack them for any reason, it's the duty of the wildlife management service to protect the people. Removing the bears is the only responsible action to be taken. They aren't in danger of going extinct, and more will be born. Proper wildlife management has made this to be the case.

Mother bears protect their cubs at all costs. That's nature.

eh....so what ? This was survival of the most fit, which, conversely, can be said to be mortality of the most stupid. Hiking in bear country should be done with bear-strength pepper spray, bells, whistles, rattles and a large-caliber sidearm or rifle of some sort, as a last-ditch deterrent....

could def use a grizzly season in that part of the country.

I heard one theory that wolves have really hurt grizzlies food supply, and grizzly attacks on humans etc...are on the rise, perhaps in part due to grizzlies starving in the region. Eastmans' mentioned it...

I saw a mama grizzly and 3 cubs when I was in that area, didn't see any black bears.

Even a very limited hunting season may teach them to fear humans.
