I do not know what is up with that. It makes me think of the folks in Arizona who are liberal who wanted to split off their portion of Arizona as a new state. The very first thing that came to my mind -- I mean the first 30 seconds -- was the implication any such state splitting would have on the United States Senate. You can bet that any such state splitting would be contended very hottly. I don't want to get too wrapped around the axle discussing all the ramifications -- not just nationally but also statewise. What happens if California splits in two? Formerly a dominant state that dominated US politics and also drove business practices -- such as automobile emissions standards -- may instead transform into two states, neither of which is in the upper 5 rank of states and which may no longer drive manufacturing processes on a national level. I'm not sure they would really want that to happen. This is probably just crazy talk by a government official -- first indication of irrationality -- who has been smoking too much wacky-tabbacy.
I'd like the idea if he included my county, Mariposa and Mono are close to me but not quite far enough north...

When we heard about that here in Arizona, the folks north, we just laughed. If the folks in Tucson broke off to form their own state they would be broke very quickly.

This isn't the first time that Northern Cal has tried to break away from the Southern part of the state. They failed in their last attempt. I can't remember exactly when it was, but it wasn't that long ago.
Edit: I don't know how I misread the title to this thread, but I did, It's actually the North that wants to secede.

Actually Lunker, this time it's the South that wants to secede. In the past, talk of splitting the state has always been stopped by water rights (the south has rights to northern CA's water and would not make it without that water).
If this Riverside pol wanted to, he could easily gather about 40+ of CA's 58 counties together to secede, leaving LA, San Francisco and basically the coastal counties left in a separate liberal state. I don't know if such a secession would help you Jeepkid but I'd love to see it.

I would think we would be included, Mariposa borders us to the south and Mono borders us on the east...We have a larger population then either of them too.
