Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

On Tuesday, the United Nations again made itself an international laughing stock – except perhaps to the American taxpayers who continue to foot 22 percent of the bill – by appointing North Korea chair of the U.N. Conference on Disarmament. That would be the same North Korea that, according to an article this week by Senator John Kerry, head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has “twice tested nuclear weapons…is developing missiles to carry them…has built facilities capable of producing highly enriched uranium for more nuclear weapons” and has defied a U.N. arms embargo by exporting weapons and sensitive technologies to rogue regimes.

It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president."

I don't know why we remain so tightly coupled to the UN. What do I mean by tightly coupled? Well, for starters, paying for 22% of the bill to keep the UN running. Surely the US GDP is not 22% of the world GDP, is it? Some more equitable sharing of costs needs to be put in place.

But more significantly, the UN has a bad track record. I assume the fundamental mission of the UN is to prevent war from breaking out and when it breaks out to quell the causes of war promptly. How often has the UN succeeded in this mission? Korea? What if you subtract the excess of US troops in Korea during that war and instead just field a peer-level quantity of US troops and US materiel? My guess a loss (footnote: the US supplied 90% of the ground troops in Korea during the war 1950-1953, to the best of my knowledge, and surely this proportion or more of the materiel). Other places? If the track record is so bad, why do we support this disfunctional organization?

Perhaps in the past the UN provided enablement and validation of US military engagements, but I don't see that strategy working very well now. Even when UN efforts are mounted, it is largely acceded that the US is the big dog in the ring and that it is largely their show -- covering validation no longer provided by UN.

We need to cashier the UN. Especially since it has become the tool of left-wing manipulators of various sorts. The UN commision on global warming and its frauduolent documents come to mind (remember the "The Himalyan glaciers are melting and are going to be totally gone in 35 years!!!" finding the commission let go through to publication even though it wasn't validated, it wasn't provided by a expert in the science, it was deprecated by those who were experts in the science?".
