Default Only 171,000.00 for poor little Michelle's air fare

Michelle, Mom, Kids Africa Trip Costing Taxpayers $171,000 At Least for Air Travel Alone

(CNSNews.com) - The White House isn’t saying how much of a tab the taxpayers will need to pick up for the week-long trip that First Lady Michelle Obama, her two children, her mother, a niece and a nephew are taking to South Africa and Botswana.
But according to Congressional Research Service estimates, the flights alone will cost taxpayers more than $171,000--almost as much as the $174,000 annual salaries paid to rank-and-file members of the U.S. House of Representatives.
The first lady--joined by daughters Malia and Sasha, Marian Robinson, and niece and nephew Leslie and Avery Robinson--is going to Africa to “improve relations between the U.S. and Africa and promote youth engagement, education, health and wellness,” according to the White House.
When CNSNews.com asked the first lady’s press office how much, on a daily basis, her trip to Africa will cost U.S. taxpayers her press secretary did not offer a response.
The White House did tell the Associated Press that all costs regarding Mrs. Obama’s family members are to be paid privately. However, because Mrs. Obama's trip will be considered official travel until her family heads off for “private time, including a safari and an overnight stay in the animal park” on Saturday, the taxpayers will be footing the bill for the first lady up to that point.
Such a trip for the First Lady typically involves an Air Force passenger jet, Secret Service personnel for security, and a separate cargo plane to transport official vehicles.
A Congressional Research Service report released in April 2010 provides guidelines for calculating the cost of the First Lady’s flights. The cargo flight, Secret Service personnel, and the meals and lodging are not included in the total cost.
(The Secret Service said it does not disclose details about any operation to protect the president or first lady.)
The first lady typically flies on a military jet which costs $5,353 to operate per hour.
A flight from Washington to Johannesburg is approximately 15 hours 30 minutes long, according to Air Routing International, a company that guides corporate flight planners. From Johannesburg to Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, a flight lasts 30 minutes, and from Gaborone to Washington, a flight is 15 hours.
In 2010 dollars, the cost of the first lady's flights alone would be $165,943. Using the Bureau of Labor Statistics's inflation adjuster to convert that to 2011 dollars, the total air travel cost is $171,961.07.
During the official part of Mrs. Obama’s trip, she will be meeting with Nelson Mandela’s wife, Graca Machel, as well as speaking with groups that work to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS in South Africa. There are currently between 5 and 6 million South Africans who live with HIV/AIDS.

What a freaking hypocrite we have in the Oval Office, he’s got to go; he has the nerve to tell Americans we have to tighten our belts and his little bride is spending money like she earned it! If anyone votes for this IDIOT again they really need to have their heads examined.

I find it interesting that they had to wrap themselves up in "blankets" made of the Republic of South Africa's flag. I'm curious... Did Obama's minions not know that when it's summer here in the Northern Hemisphere, it's winter in the Southern? Did they fail to take along a couple of jackets? Why wrap up in an African flag? Doesn't Air Force One have a couple blankets, maybe with the Presidential Seal on it or something? I know that Southwest Airlines provides complimentary blankets for its passengers on their $59 flights...

Thank God they didn’t wrap themselves in the American Flag that would have been a disgrace.

Surely there are other more substantive things to attack Obama for. Didn't other first ladies and family take overseas trips? Is this just a tourist visit or is this diplomatic in some capacity. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an Obama fan. But I think there is PLENTY of uncontroversial, thoroughbred beef to cut into without resorting to mean, petty sniping. Is it an option for Michelle Obama and children to fly coach on standard service air carriers? Sure, I can see the burden and the cost, but I just don't want to get into the sticky game of defining how much, when, for what these people can travel.

If you want to find something to tear into, how about all the golf Obama plays? And I'm not concerned of the cost or even the amount of time this takes him out of the oval office and his duties. I'm concerned about the news media giving this largely a pass when they beat heck out of Bush II for going to his ranch -- often on working vacations. A bit of a double standard. Maybe I missed it, but I haven't seen the media beat up Obama about his frequent golfing outings.

But that is just my opinion, others are free to disagree or even to lambast me for my short sighted attitude on this subject.

Did that post go completely over your head? It has to do with the way the IDIOT says we have to tighten our belts, I’d rather see Barry on the golf course, keeps him from screwing something else up. And I don’t think his green fee’s totaled 171k..
Right there is plenty to go after him about, this was just one more of them!

considered official travel...
Exactly what official U.S. government business is the first lady conducting in Africa?

The text of the story answers your question:

Quote:

Apparently there are too many lonely, stupid, fat kids in Africa...

To answer Alsatian's question, I suspect this may be slightly petty, but, it is more in a long line of evidence of the Obamas hypocritically calling for us to tighten our belts and control our carbon footprints, while they continue to squeeze more blood from our rocks...

Note that the story talks of $171,000 as the cost for FLOTUS's flight. This does not include the additional cost of the "separate cargo plane" that carries the "official vehicles." I would assume that the cost of that flight is pretty similar to the cost of her jumbo jet...

And, for Pete's sake, what about all the global warming gases they are spewing into the ozone???? You are going to be taxed because your house is too big, but, we are going to fly multiple jets all over the world, at least two or three times a month...

Besides... we need fresh meat to chew on daily around here...

That was kind of my take on it also. That is of course if you take the stated reason for her trip serious. Or, it could just be a 'see the world trip' with no thought for cost, while the rest of us need to cut back on our excesses for the good of the planet.

Maybe she is just getting the red carpet, paid for, African trip with the girls in before 2012 rolls around.

It's nothing more than a joy trip back to the mother land for he family. They could say whatever they want but the fact is they are on a tax payer vacation. Just shows how hypocritical Washington is. Most of them are fine with them riding around in limousines and private jets yet Obama tells us we need to buy electric junk cars and drive less.
