The American people will never let either party touch the senior citizen entitlements that are destined to bankrupt the country. This a problem that will be resolved outside of either political party. Worst case, it will be resolved by rampant inflation that will demolish the value of those entitlements and destroy the American economy. Best case, it will be resolved by Americans getting so rich and productive that they can afford to pay for the entitlements. In the meantime, if politicians try to cut them in any way, they will be shown the exit door by the American voters.
Democrats scored an upset in one of New York’s most conservative Congressional districts on Tuesday, dealing a blow to the national Republican Party in a race that largely turned on the party’s plan to overhaul Medicare.
....
Two months ago, the Democrat, Kathy Hochul, was considered an all-but-certain loser in the race against the Republican, Jane Corwin. But Ms. Hochul seized on the Republican’s embrace of the proposal from Representative Paul D. Ryan, Republican of Wisconsin, to overhaul Medicare, and she never let up.
.....
“I have almost always voted the party line,” said Gloria Bolender, a Republican from Clarence who is caring for her 80-year-old mother. “This is the second time in my life I’ve voted against my party.

What needs to happen is the media needs to state what Ryan's plan says, not what they want it to say. Also, the media needs to point out that the very medicare they are screaming foul about is already robbed by Obamacare to the tune of billions.

Consider the source. NYT. A win for the Dems was going to be spun off as a Medicare issue, that was their hope. Being from the area, it is no stauch conservative district. A Repub can and has won if they are a RINO such as Kemp. The State of New York is Liberal, and will always remain that way. Dont sit there and expect a spearhead of entitlement reformation to come of the Empire State. It will have to be dragged to that point, kicking and screaming, along with California. This State is Broke Broke. The last one over the Peace Bridge......shut off the lights.
After further review I see that there was a drastic decline in Republican turnout, to the tune of over 100,000. Was it apathy or are the Repubs reluctant to address the Medicare issue also. I think both, and lets not forget the 8% lost to the third party. Making a statement with ones vote can have concequences . It did here.
The choice for the Republican party is clear and stark. They either have to renounce their plan to replace Medicare with a voucher system or lose all the seats they won and many more in 2012. After their triumph of six months ago, to now be defeated in a solidly Republican district despite spending twice as much as the Democratic candidate should be a clear signal to the Republican party that they have made a huge mistake on the Medicare issue that will cost them dearly in 2012. The third party candidate in this race took a small percentage of the vote and as much as the Republican leadership would like people to believe that was the cause of their defeat, the real reason was the Republican party has left the mainstream of American politics.
The Republicans have to decide now whether they are going to renounce their ill conceived Medicare proposal or face a reelected President Obama and solid Democratic majorities in the House and the Senate in two years.

So, what is your suggestion then, just let it bell up? What is the Democrat plan? Oh yea, steal 500 billion from it and scream foul about the Republican plan. So you suggest that trying to keep it solvent is equal to the Democrat cry of "kill grandma"? I guess its much more palatable to kill grandma if you are a Democrat, but to buckle up and try to save a system, it is an atrocity. Talking points do not fix problems.
