Not exactly. It's a difference in religious norms.
Outdated, and extreme ideas, most definately. However, they are rooted in hundreds of years of tradition.
Breaking free of centuries of traditions is a difficult thing to do. Look at the hate crimes being perpetrated here in the US between black and white citizens. The bitterness and hatred runs deep.
I do agree that the honor killings need to stop. However, it is foolish to dismiss the reasoning behind the honor killings. Many Asian and Middle Eastern societies have had a long history of cherishing being honorable.
Even the anglo-saxon societies valued honor at one point too. Even though we anglo-saxons have had the most storied history of violence and rage between one another and all other groups. It's still true that some of the anglo-saxon people still value some traditions that value honorable qualities. Family values are most notable amongst those beliefs.
Humans of all races have done amazingly wonderful, or incredibly brutal, acts in the name of honor. Honor in of itself is neither good nor bad. As someone once aptly said, "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions."
