I'm not saying that third parties should not be fielded. They must however first be vetted in the smaller local elections first.
To establish a platform from which to to run for higher offices. They are not doing so. Instead they are hamstringing the Republicans by running with a candidate who stands little chance of winning.

SH the Independent candidate was a part of the issue.
Also the Republican candidate had been decided by early April, while the Democratic candidate wasn't decided until August. Giving the Democrats 5 more months of mudslinging, which they took full advantage of.
