I was in elementary school in the 1970s. We drank chocolate milk, soda and ate candy. Obesity was not an issue. Of course we played baseball, dodgeball, lacrosse, etc., etc. It seems to me the solution is not a matter of diet as it is about exercise.

Eight ounces of white milk served in Los Angeles public schools contains 14 grams of natural sugar or lactose; fat-free chocolate milk has an extra six grams of sugar for a total of 20 grams, while fat-free strawberry milk has a total of 27 grams — the same as eight ounces of Coca-Cola.
They went bonkers over a measly 13 grams of sugar. It looks like the vegans are in charge of school nutrition.

hahaha.... Read it again. That 13 extra grams is in the strawberry milk. The fat-free chocolate milk only has SIX extra grams of sugar... That's less than half a tablespoon... Six grams of sugar is roughly 23 calories...

oops. Yep, the vegans are in charge of child nutrition; i'm sure of it now.
OK... did a little more research. A pound of fat is roughly 3500 calories. By cutting 23 calories a day during school lunches, that's roughly 4000 calories per year. So, the vegans are keeping our poor kids from gaining about 1.2 pounds per year...Heck, they could probably burn more than that off if they just made them walk around the football field once a day...
But efforts by some other districts turned sour after children drank less milk. Milk consumption drops by 35 percent when flavored milks are removed, according to the Milk Processors Education Program.
At the rate their going I imagine their next step will be to "force" the kids to drink white milk.
