Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Very interesting. Looks like the secong amendment is working as planned over 200 years ago. Good find!

Yes, indeed. How do you invade and suppress a nation such as ours with so many arms and so much ammunition in the hands of The People?

I saw a comment by someone posting in response to that thread. All due respect to that person, and I'm not attacking them so much as confronting a logical and strong argument. The comment was that single shot .30-06 rifles -- as exemplary of what hunters may possess -- are not going to stand up to fully automatic AK-47s.

Let me stand behind a tree in the green belt not far from my house -- or in the woods around the perimeter of the park in the center of town -- or in any of a number of other places in my local town. Let me select which tree and the arrangement of shadow. How many guys with fully automatic AK-47s standing out in the open can I take out with my .30-06 at 200 yards and then slip back into the woods behind me and be gone? Also, if one hunter takes out one guy with an AK-47 and then is himself taken out . . . how many guys with AK-47s (the presumptive invaders) do you need to have to pacify the country?

Well, I won't dwell on this kind of chest thumping thought experiment. I will say I'ld rather be the guy living in the local community with the .30-06 with a trunk-load of 180 grain cartridges in the closet than the guy carrying the full auto AK-47 who is unfamiliar with the area and who is hated by the local population. Also, this guy with the AK-47 is presumably at the end of a very long supply line. Bear that in mind. Cut that supply line and then where is this guy? Gutted with his entrails hanging from the trees for his buddies to contemplate?

Wolverine!!!!

Interesting that the article omitted mention of Texas, which, I believe, annually fields the largest army of hunters in the U.S...

The problem with 'The World's Largest Army' is that it's not cohesive. There's guys who'll tell you 'bolt action' is a good rifle...other's will hold to single-shots and falling-blocks...others will love semi-autos. Each will NOT stand up for another's choice...and many don't care if government treachery outlaws the infamous 'black guns'. IN many respects, they're like disgusting pukey liberals because they will allow the government to savage any group OTHER THAN THEIR OWN. Shotgunners on trap/skeet/clays ranges dont give a crap if handguns are outlawed...just look at Phil from Maine...he could not care less about anything or anyone other than that which directly affects him. Not to hold Phil out as a poster child for this sort of thing, but it's a good example of what we all here can recognize as the "ME ME ME" mindset of many hunters. If we gotta have the biggest army in the world, I'd NOT have hunters in it....I'd want RIFLEMEN in it...men who will come out of their homes and take that shot at an agressor, not one who will cower and plead non-involvement or worse, inapplicability of the situation to his own life. It is for this reason that NRA is more the model as a firearms-rights-only organization. I don't trust hunters as far as I can throw them...and why should I ? Their only interest is sport. While some may be gung-ho gun rights supporters, many of them lack the political acumen to become involved in the fight to protect our right to defend ourselves either as individuals or as a nation. IF there are an estimated 80 million gun-owners among these "amber waves of grain" then there should be 80 million NRA members. Hunters just keep wildlife at manageable levels as long as a state keeps the season open for them.

Bingo, Bergall.

You see it on every self defense, shooting and hunting website. Some talk about "cop killer bullets" and "assault rifles" as if they were the scourge of humanity.

Anyone remember Zumbo; the writer from Outdoor Life magazine? Zumbo went after those dastardly black "assault rifles". He was not prepared for the backlash. These ill advised words cost Zumbo his Remington sponsorship and his job:

Quote:
"As I write this, I'm hunting coyotes in southeastern Wyoming with Eddie Stevenson, PR Manager for Remington Arms, Greg Dennison, who is senior research engineer for Remington and several writers. We're testing Remington's brand new .17 cal Spitfire bullet on coyotes.

"I must be living in a vacuum. The guides on our hunt tell me that the use of AR and AK rifles have a rapidly growing following among hunters, especially prairie dog hunters. I had no clue. Only once in my life have I ever seen anyone using one of these firearms.

"I call them 'assault' rifles, which may upset some people. Excuse me, maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I see no place for these weapons among our hunting fraternity. I'll go so far as to call them 'terrorist' rifles. They tell me that some companies are producing assault rifles that are 'tack drivers' (highly accurate, powerful rifles).

"Sorry, folks, in my humble opinion, these things have no place in hunting. We don't need to be lumped into the group of people who terrorize the world with them, which is an obvious concern. I've always been comfortable with the statement that hunters don't use assault rifles. We've always been proud of our 'sporting firearms.'"
My AR-15 guns make me feel young again. Even have a left handed one.

Ummm... The fact that Zumbo lost his job over his comments should tell you something about "hunters", and outdoors man in general.

I guess I have to disagree with you and Bergall on this one. Of course we're not cohesive at this point, but neither were the Minutemen at before the Revolutionary War. I believe that were the need to arise we would see a mobilization like none have seen before. The political disputes would evaporate as the need for us to come together in a common cause would take full precedence. I believe that you are under estimating the American condition, sure we bicker about issues on a site like this. But I truly believe that should the need arise we would come together as an unstoppable force.

Bergall I'm one of those "hunters" your referring too. I also love to shoot and reload my own ammo. I have a 7mmRUM that will make that above mentioned 200 yard shot with a .3006 look like a chip shot. Yup, you want a good rifleman, give this "hunter" a call. I'll hit that mofo like a Muskie.

Bingo lunkerdog. You nay Sayers claiming these are only single shot, semi autos..... It doesn't take much to make a semi Into a full auto. We just have silly laws discouraging the majority from doing so. We have tons of machine shops and know how to make it happen. Furthermore, how many are ex military? I would also throw in educated but perhaps semi educated might have to suffice.
