Hurricane names raise a warning
The 2003 hurricane season is here, and that means a whole new list of names such as Larry, Sam and Wanda ready to make tropical-storm history.
Although Spanish and French names are included in this year"™s lineup, among them Juan and Claudette, which struck Texas last week, popular African American names, like Keisha, Jamal and Deshawn, are nowhere to be found.
Some black lawmakers don"™t seem to mind, but Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) does. "śAll racial groups should be represented,"ť said Lee.
Hurricane names have been too lily white for Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas). She says all ethnic groups should be represented.
The World Meteorological Organization began naming tropical storms after women in 1953. That made sense to scientists at the time who thought women and storms were both unpredictable. After feminist groups protested, men"™s names were added in 1979.
The National Weather Service says hurricane names are derived from languages spoken in areas that border the Atlantic Ocean, where such storms occur. Yet that doesn"™t explain why Gaston, Ernesto and Cindy were chosen and Antwon, Destiny and Latonya were passed over.
Lee said she hoped in the future the weather establishment "śwould try to be inclusive of African American names."ť
That could take a while. The current roster of hurricane names isn"™t due to be updated until 2007.
Has there been a hurricane shiela?
That is an african american name is it not?
If they has used kiesha ,malik , tamika, bundra, zebedee, lawanda, heck la whatever, queen, princess, and by all means lets not leave out shaq, kobe and oprah ! the system would have been dubbed racist by leading that african americans are destructive!
You just can' t make some folks happy like african americans don' t have normal names like shiela!
Right on Soarkrebel, Why I think I' m being racially descriminated against also, just where in the heck are the redneck named hurricanes I don' t ever remember one named john boy, billy bob or bubba.
People like her is not out to help, they are here to separate and make problems between the white and black race, we don' t need her type.

OK, wait a second here. I wasn' t born yesterday, I' m not stupid, and I' ve got a pretty good memory. Years ago, hurricanes were only named for women. I remember it well. The women took offense to that claiming that hurricanes were bad, evil, destructive forces that should be named for men and women cuz it made women look bad to name them for women. Another male ploy to gain the upper hand! I thought it was kinda silly, but I bought into it ok.
So.....this is a beautiful example of what is wrong with black leadership in the US. Sheila is once again so far out of touch with reality that she makes herself look stupid. HURRICANES ARE NOT GOOD SHEILA!!!!! BUT....she gets re-elected. And so do other black congressional leaders like Rangel, Sharpton, Conyers, Maxine Waters, Barbara Lee......somebody votes for these people!!!!!!!
Uhhhh...is this what we are paying these people to do ???? Complain about names for hurricanes ???? And they wonder why nothing ever gets done at more expense to us taxpayers !!!![:@][:@][:@][:@]

Just like Bambi, Thumper, Peter Rabbit and other such things, these names allow us to envision human traits in places where they do not exist. Sure it is more romantic, imaginative, creative and colorful but immature, unpractical and now it causes concern among races. How foolish we have become to be so sensitive to such simple things in our lives.
The best solution I would guess is to just number them. Hurricane 2003/1, 2003/2 etc. Im sure someone would find cause to complain even then.
I wonder what Orson Wells would think?
