Y'all remember the CA Republican leader who had the watermelons in a newsletter about the president? "The latest newsletter by an Inland Republican women's group depicts Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama surrounded by a watermelon, ribs and a bucket of fried chicken, prompting outrage in political circles. " http://www.pe.com/localnews/inland/s...6.3d67d4a.html
Now this:
"ORANGE COUNTY, CALIF. -- Long-time Republican Party of Orange County committeewoman Marilyn Davenport is being urged to resign after she sent a birther email depicting President Barack Obama and his parents as apes. The story was first reported by the OC Weekly.
Davenport's email, sent to "friends" last week, shows the President's face superimposed upon a monkey's face, with the caption: "Now you know why no birth certificate."
Davenport's position with the Orange County Republicans involves fundraising and organizing in California's 72nd Assembly district, encompassing Brea, Fullerton and Placentia. She is also active in the Tea Party.
Davenport told the OC Weekly the whole thing was being blown out of proportion by the "liberal media."
"Everybody who knows me knows that I am not a racist," she said. "It was a joke. I have friends who are black. Besides, I only sent it to a few people--mostly people I didn't think would be upset by it." http://chicago.gopride.com/news/arti...-birther-email
I read the story but haven't seen the pic. Its got to be funny. I personally think Obama is the real life Curious George. Look at his big ears, facial features and how much trouble he likes to get in while blaming everyone else.

Rev, that's not even situational ethics. How about (if your allegation is accurate) 'two wrongs'?
In other words, you are being illogical.
It's odd to see folks here not even dealing with the topic.
I'll deal with it, is it all animals that would trigger the outrage or just monkeys? What if it was the south end of a north bound horse? How about something closer to home and the face of a Neanderthal?
It's only racist to the racist mind. Animals don't have birth certificates usually so the gist is he's not human. How about a little green man?
How about people who are bent on making people they oppose politically look like racists? Bunch of bigots is what they are.
One good thing about people like this woman is that her racism causes all the other bigots to come out from under the banana pile.
Watermelon, ribs (if properly BBQ'd) and a bucket of fried chicken is a delicious sounding dinner. Anybody eating this simply has good taste buds that they listen to. This doesn't sound pejorative to me, especially the BBQ ribs since I regularly BBQ and eat them.
I haven't seen the picture so am only commenting on the idea of anybody's face being superimposed on the body of a chimp or monkey. That is obviously meant to be pejorative or insulting. If I remember correctly, I believe Bush 2 and Reagan both had similar caricatures made about them.
The "racist" aspect of such a picture is a curious invention and bears further discussion. BO, what makes you determine, believe or even just feel that such a caricature is racist?
Is it the implied reference to Darwin's theory of evolution? Men descended and/or evolved from apes, gorillas or monkeys? If this is the reason, doesn't that evolutionary theory apply to all men, regardless of their race?
Is it that monkeys are from Africa (generally) and this is supposed to be some subtle reference about Obama was born if Africa (Kenya to be specific I believe)? That would seem to be a birther insinuation regarding his place of birth but doesn't appear to imply racism?
Is the racist implication, in your opinion, the idea that the caricature depicts Obama as a monkey which is obviously a less evolved and therefore less intelligent form of life? It is definitely an insult to Obama's intelligence but does not seem to overtly racist.
Or is it just the insult in general which definitely is present? Again, that is insulting to both Obama and his supporters. It is also unprofessional as well. No doubt, the Republican fund-raising person sending out this cartoon will find that it backfires on her as it should. America does become a less civilized country when so many people attack a sitting (or past) President personally but such repulsive behavior is definitely not limited to the right, is it?
I look forward to this discussion and your reasoning behind your views.

If you don't think such a picture repeats racial stereotypes, I think you are living in a vacuum. And, believe me, I'm not the only one to call them racist.

Why is the woman taking the time to deny she is a racist? As for racial imagery, think of the cartoon of the dead chimpanzee (remember that?). If you're old enough, think of the responses when Howard Cosell said "Look at that little monkey run!"
If you think there is no racial content to the email, then you are unfamiliar with American culture and history or you are fooling yourself.

of course you aren't. We're told that even the mere opposing Obama and his socialist ideas is an act of racism.
