I know that some feel every thing should be built abroad because this is the land of opportunity. I question that every time I see a plant closing. Sure they own it and when a new buyer buys it the new buyer owns it. That is surely without question. But to buy a business with the intent of tearing in down for junk is IMO beyound means. Anyways if this is the American drean you think off. This country will never make it very far. Here it is Great Northern was distroyed by a hostile take over from G.P. Then sold and resold so a Canadian company could take the dams out from underneath it. Now the only real thing they want to do is distroy what is left for nothing but junk! These were 2 of the bigest mills in the country. When they were built and still houses one of the biggest paper machines in the country there.
Sounds to me like the locals could put a tax lien on the property, foreclose, and then sell it to your union, if y'all wanted to keep it going. Of course, the union might have a few less dollars for greasing politicians' grubby paws... On the other hand, maybe y'all don't believe enough in the mills to take on the risk of ownership?
It sure is Phil. How many folks around that area got rich over the years since that mill was there? Today it's not needed. That happens. You had a chance to out bid the birders with a $2 offer. Why didn't you step up and make it? There is easy money right there for you. I think you still have a few weeks left to place your bid. It says they were looking for a buyer.

Maybe they should put the Mill up on eBay with a starting bid of $1.00 and no reserve.
Let all the locals who are smarter than evil management put their money where their mouth is, and save all those jobs.
If they did, my guess is that they would get a quick, rude lesson on what ROI is.

You do realize don't you that this is just another symptom of the disease that is going to guarantee that you IPCS will not be able to collect all those social security benefits that you so vigorously defended on another thread. You see when middle class manufacturing jobs go away, they are typically replaced with minimum wage service jobs. Those type of jobs are grossly inadequate in producing social security revenue. For your own selfish interests you should be fighting for decent jobs in America instead of cheerleading their export.
I suppose at this point it really doesn't matter much, in about 20 years or so, the elderly will probably be experiencing how it was to retire in the early 1900s. The numbers are impossible, when people lose faith in the dollar due to the staggering debt load, the government will be forced to print money ala the Weimar Republic and the elderly will be wiped out via hyper-inflation. I imagine they will be reduced to food lines and living on the street or with relatives. I just hope to god property and the stock market are impervious to inflation because that is what I am betting my retirement on.

Amen to that. i could go on for hours about how world trade and lop sided trade agreements have killed this country. but folks like field mouse are brain washed as to what's staring them in the face..at this time 15% of all americans are on food stamps and that's a fact.
I'm the brained washed guy. You guys are a joke. Hockeydad's very job is to put people out of work. In fact his living greatly depends on that fact. He is a glorified programmer who automates things. If he can't put someone out of work, he couldn't collect 100k a year. So tell me again, who is the brain washed guy?

The real question is why this country is in debt. We are in debt because now we have a large portion of our society that are bloodsuckers. They enjoy living off the backs of others. Why work when the government will just go to your neighbor and steal more to give to you. Tell me again what you did to earn that unemployment check? What did you do for your neighbors to pay to send your kid to school? What gives you the right the government to force your employer to pay you X amount of money? Why just because you reach a certain age you have the right for some else pay for your retirement?

During the Great Depression, there were various approaches to the cry of "do something" from the citizenry. In Germany, they elected a Fascist dictator - Hitler - and tried to take over the world. Italy and ***an followed roughly the same route. In the USA, we instituted the New Deal, including Social Security. Social unrest was not out of the question here in the USA either.
The New Deal was considered very conservative at the time it was instituted. It was "sold" to the American people (for better or worse). Some of the terms it was sold under - you pay in and you get back out, it's not a welfare program - were clearly understood to be false by the politicians at the time, but this is what was necessary to push it through (again, for better or worse). It was sold as a retirement plan, but it is a welfare plan - one that most benefit from in some way. I feel it is a necessary part of living in a free and stable society. All this laissez-faire, pure capitalism stuff sounds great and all, but my study of the reality of history says that most of the time, that ends up in the poor somehow rising up against the rich and taking their money by force of revolution. The option is that the government takes it in a more orderly fashion instead through taxes. Is it fair? Is it right? Doesn't matter - one little nugget I've learned over the years is that life ain't fair, so get over it.
Builder, have you noticed no response to my statement of fact? Hockeydad's very existence for a job is to PUT PEOPLE OUT OF WORK. Notice, you don't hear the least built of guilt from him for putting people out of work do you? But he will come on here and blame everything else. I wonder why that is?
Now in response to you justifying the government stealing money from everyone, hogwash. You need to do a little more studying on the so called great depression. It was the great government depression. Depressions and recessions were nothing new to this country or any other country. They happen. The great government depression was a direct result of the newly formed federal reserve starving the country of money. Their policies are what made it deep. Furthermore, FDR the liar that he was, just like Obama, came in running on tax cuts. Well we know how that turned out don't we? He did the exact opposite. He raised taxes, stole more money from the people, in other words, starved the economy of the much needed scarce resource called money.
Now today we have become a nation of freeloaders. The majority of America live at the expense of another. That in another name is called slavery. We have become a nation in love with slavery again. We can't survive with all the Pauls we have. That's what changes. You reach a tipping point that society can't survive and it crumbles.
