The "Confederate flag" that most southerners fly is not the Confederate flag at all. It is a variant of the Confederate battle flag.

The "Stars and Bars" is but one of many different Confederate Battle Flags--it's just the one that is most widely recognized, and the one that is most often banned from public places. Even the University of Mississippi banned it from their classrooms, and recently got rid of thier original mascot "Colonel Reb" (replaced him with a black bear--go figure--I have yet to make the connection, since Ole Miss is still the home of the "Rebels").
It's pollitical correctness at it's finest. It just highlights the stupidity and/or ignorance of some people. Several years ago there was a big (and very costly) debate in the state of Mississippi about changing our state flag. It seems that we are the only one left with the guts to stick to our heritage, and incorporate a Confederate Battle Flag into our state flag. Guess what the replacement was going to be? A different Confederate Battle Flag....just one that wasn't nearly as recognizeable. All the hate groups (NAACP, AFL-CIO, etc.) were all pushing for the "new" flag...thankfully it didn't make it. It would have been funny if it had, other than all the money the state would have had to waste changing out flags, on top of the money already wasted on the debate.
