I'm really glad that I didn't have to eat the food while I was in school. We always had a pot of soup and leftover rice or noodles in the refrigerator and I would heat that up and put it in a thermos for lunch. I got my own breakfast too, usually the same as lunch.

(Mama worked until 2AM so I got myself ready for school and she would get up to see me off and go back to bed for awhile.)
I will never understand why parents should not be held responsible for feeding their own kids. The idea that schools have to provide not only lunch, but breakfast too, is incomprehensible to me.
This looks like a manifestation of the "it takes a village" philosophy.
