Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Government shutdown?

Does anyone really care if the federal government is shut down? It might be the best thing to happen right now. Shut it down for a month or two and no one will notice.

I wish the the government would shut down so people would see once and for all the world won't come to an end.

What would actually happen? National parks, museums, and maybe some smaller useless agencies will be shut down, but nothing big...?

The day to day office workers would get a temporary vacation (without pay).
SS checks would still go out since most of them are now direct deposit anyway.
Police and Fire workers would still be on the job.
Military would still be present and available.
The local welfare office would be closed.
Federal agencies would still be open (FBI, ATF, CIA, etc....).

I think it will be good for the American people. It seems the majority of Americans are so dependent on the system that they feel as if they couldn't function without it. Our country is full of people who are able bodied and everyone should be doing their part. People feel this twisted need to breast feed on our government systems, & in all reality our american government was created to serve the people; now it is just the opposite. My rant for the day... lol

I'm interested in more information on Ryan's budget proposal which includes significant Medicare and Social Security reforms for those under 55 in 2011. Particularly interested as I am 54 in 2011...

The info available so far doesn't really explain how it works on a micro level. i.e. How does it affect me? Looks like the benefits will get cut significantly, in exchange for me being able to "contribute" a couple grand a year to an individualized retirement savings account, with a guaranteed return at least equal to inflation. So,a couple grand, times 13 years until I reach normal retirement age means I'll get a property right in an account well under $50K in it. I suspect that the benefits that I've been paying for since my first job when I was 14 will be cut by way more than that pittance. And, I lose the benefit of the several hundred thousand dollars that I've already paid into the system. (And, yes, I do understand the court cases saying I don't have a "right" to any of that...)

Yep IPSC, it's going to happen because congress has been lying to the people ever since the start of all three programs, SS, Medicare and Medicaid. However, getting these program's burdens back in check will get our economy roaring. Did you see the outlays of undefended promises somewhere around page 16 in the proposal? 100 trillion that we can't possibly pay for.

Anyway, the debate has been set. The funny thing is, here the Dems are complaining about 61 billion is cuts are detrimental. Nancy is claiming 6million seniors wont get feed. Can anyone explain that one?

I remember the so called "government shutdown's" years ago, back when I was on active duty in the US Coast Guard.

We were all still on duty, still in uniform, with no loss of pay at all.
All the federal civilians (GS-7, etc...) who worked with us in the office, were sent home without pay.

Bingo!!!

For about 30 years i've been saying that the political pukes who squandered the social security surplus on wars, pork barrel projects and welfare would never pay it back. Looks like this prediction is coming true.

If you dare to make money on real estate, the stock market or precious metals your profit will still be taxed as "unearned" income. i just love that title "unearned" income: Makes the welfare addicts feel good that their benefactors are being taxed like they stole the profit on their investments. Sold some precious metals last year and got the hades taxed out of me: Paid enough in taxes to support three or four welfare families really well.
