WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush said Wednesday he has government lawyers working on a law that would define marriage as a union between a woman and a man, casting aside calls to legalize gay marriages.
" I believe marriage is between a man and a woman and I believe we ought to codify that one way or the other and we have lawyers looking at the best way to do that," the president said a wide-ranging news conference at the White House Rose Garden.
Bush also urged, however, that America remain a " welcoming country" -- not polarized on the issue of homosexuality.
" I am mindful that we' re all sinners and I caution those who may try to take a speck out of the neighbor' s eye when they got a log in their own," the president said. " I think it is important for our society to respect each individual, to welcome those with good hearts."
" On the other hand, that does not mean that someone like me needs to compromise on the issue of marriage," he added.
Bush has long opposed gay marriage but as recently as earlier this month had said that a constitutional ban on gay marriage proposed in the House might not be needed despite a Supreme Court decision that some conservatives think opens the door to legalizing same-sex marriages.
The Supreme Court struck down a Texas law that made homosexual sex a crime, overturning an earlier ruling that said states could punish homosexuals for having sex.
Conservative Justice Antonin Scalia fired off a blistering dissent of the ruling.
The " opinion dismantles the structure of constitutional law that has permitted a distinction to be made between heterosexual and homosexual unions, insofar as formal recognition in marriage is concerned," Scalia wrote. The ruling specifically said that the court was not addressing that issue, but Scalia warned, " Do not believe it."
Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, R-Colorado, is the main sponsor of the proposal offered May 21 to amend the Constitution. It was referred on June 25 to the House Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution.
To be added to the Constitution, the proposal must be approved by two-thirds of the House and the Senate and ratified by three-fourths of the states.

First off, I think that if the government has anything to do with marriages, which they do, then there should allow gay marriages. I" m all for equal rights. Me personally, I don' t think that the government should have anything to do with marriage, it' s a church thing for me.
Second off, I really think that the federal government shouldn' t have anything to do with this, as I don' t think that the federal government should have anything to do with just about anything. I believe that since big brother is into marriages, then it should be left as a state to state issue and let the people vote on it.

OK, a viewpoint from a Canadian (who lives in Ontario where gay marriages are now legal).
Thank God somebody has the coljoenes (sp?) to stand up for themselves
I have no hard feelings towards gay people. I have a friend who is and I am not comfortable around him and him, but I do not dissassociate with him nor damn him to hell (not my job).
But three idiots [&:] who call themselves Superior Justices recently found that banning gay marriages is unconsitutional or some damned thing and order the Province to change the law.
Now marriage is being redefined by these bozo' s and should soon include such idiocies as " man and sheep" " brother and sister" , etc etc (I mean isn' t banning these marriages unconstitutional as well?)
But really, it obviously doesn' t matter to me that much - does it?[:@]

Becoming a better hunter.......day by day
i normally don' t like the government sticking thier nose in church things either but , i can' t stomach two guys doing those things or being around it which is why i' m looking for a new job , and as far as what MR. PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH said , well i agree go get' em george , i just hope this doesn' t hurt his reelection bid , remember the devilcrats , and all of those sympathizers
another thing that urks me is all of this gay rights crap , we allready have rights under the constitution , which covers them as well , so if they start getting all of these special rights that they keep moaning about how does that equate into the people having equal rights
the only people that i can see having special rights are the handicapped/retarded people and children as they aren' t old enough or can' t help themselves when it comes to exercising thier civil liberties , they have to have someone else look out for them
and i might get a lot of flak on this but , i can' t stomach abortion either . to me it' s just plain outright murder
sorry if i offended anybody here it wasn' t aimed at anybody specific but , i just had to let that out
