Bloomberg sent some of New York’s finest to Arizona to carry out an undercover investigation, part of broader effort by Bloomberg to crack down on illegal gun sales nationwide.

Hmmm, trying to prevent another shooting like Tucson. Perhaps he just needs to check and see if his law enforcement folks are doing their job since it was failure of the Sherrif that lead to the shooting.

It will rear its ugly head before the 2012 elections you can be sure of that.
From what I understand the fact that there wasn't a background check made wasn't the issue. Private sales don't have to do that unless the seller knows the buyer is doing it illegally or has a plan to use the gun illegally. These undercover cops told the buyers that they were glad there wasn't a background check because they probably wouldn't have passed…… Talk about entrapment.

It might serve everyone well to have Bloomberg send some officers to Mexico and cross the border to see how easy it is to cross into the U.S… This to me would make more sense, but then again, Liberals don't make much sense after all.
As an Arizona resident (who used to live in NYC) and who has purchased 2 pistols from the CRoW gunshow vendors I am going to chime in here...

“The background check system failed in Arizona, it failed in Virginia and it fails in states around the country,” said Bloomberg advisor John Feinblatt, referring to other investigations. “If we don’t fix it now, the question is not whether another massacre will occur, but when.”
Private, unlicensed sellers are not required to run federal background checks, but it is a violation of federal law to sell guns to people who may be felons or mentally ill.
1. This is a blog post which explains why it makes little sense
2. The background check system works perfectly well in Arizona thank you very much. If you have not been convicted of a crime, have not committed a felony, found guilty of domestic violence or otherwise found mentally unstable, the back ground check will not come back with anything. Jarred Loughner did not have any of these things on his record and so was able to legally purchase a firearm.

Such purchases were made without any background check but were perfectly legal. …
If it is legal, how is the mayor "cracking down" on something that is not illegal?

His undercover officers hinted to the seller that they were glad there wasn't a background check because they probably wouldn't pass. Illegal to knowingly sell to someone who is banned from buying is my guess.
