The man in charge of transportation safety for the state has been reassigned after being cited for drunk driving.

John Evans has been director of the Bureau of Transportation Safety for the Department of Transportation for the past five years.

He was arrested early Friday in Madison for drunken driving. Evans registered a 0.14 percent for alcohol levels by breath. The legal level of intoxication is 0.10 but goes down to 0.08 on September 30th.

A DOT official says he will be reassigned to different duties.

Evans attended a ceremony this month in which Governor Jim Doyle signed the bill lowering the legal blood alcohol level. He has also appeared at several press events organized after deadly drunken driving crashes.

Kari Kinnard is the executive director of MADD Wisconsin. She has worked closely with Evans on drunken-driving related issues. She says it' s amazing to find him in this situation since he' s
been dedicated for so many years to traffic safety.

Evans had no comment.

I can see the irony here but where does the NAZI thing cime in to play? The guy had been doing the job we pay him to do. Drinking and driving is a serious problem in WI and everywhere else in the USA. We need strict laws that can be enforced. Meaningful penalties that are applied and judges that do their job.
Further, I find it humorous that MADD would make any comment on it because their regional director got cited for OWI a few years back.
This prove a couple of things, these people are human and make mistakes and we have good honest law enforcement in the state.

You know where I stand on these laws, they are stupid as hell.

Death on the road has an average bac of 0.17, the state nazi' s caved under federal (albeit illegal - against the 10th amendment) pressure to lower the bac to 0.08 for a piddly 3 million in federal highway funds.

If anyone in this state had some balls they would have challenged this on constitutional grounds. Granted, it' s a very minor fight but damn it, it was winable.

I have 1000x more problems with cell phones on the road - but they' re socially acceptable.

You may be correct on the 10th Amend thing but the Fed funding is really needed in this tax hell so sometime it' s not worth the battle.
Im 100% with you on the cell phone thing. That minister last week and some woman this week were killed because these, " I' ve got to make a call, I can handle it " A holes don' t understand all the physioalogical effects (tunnel vision) of using a phone and driving. They compare it to drinking a cup of coffee or changing the radio station. Stupid dumb arses. How did they live before the cell phones??? But thats an entirely different thread, and we' ve gone there before.
