I' m so hacked off right now, and I knew it was going to happen.
A little background for those who care.
In Wisconsin, taxes are beyond control. We' re consistently in the top five highest taxed states, and we get essentially nothing for it, other than two sweaty, lazy government hogs pick up our trash instead of one.
The problem in the state is that the State overtaxes us, then ships it off to the local governments for them to spend. Which they do. Like most states, we faced a " budget shortfall" this year, which translated means, " We' d really like to spend this money but we don' t have it." So a budget was passed that cut funding to local municipalities and towns. The Republicans realized that in response to this, local governments would just jack up the property tax levy to make up for the difference. So they decided to enact a property tax freeze so local governments couldn' t do this. The only way they could raise property taxes would be through a referendum.
Now our Governer, who in his campaign, promised not to raise taxes, has vetoed that portion of the budget. Also he killed a plan to make senior citizens pay just a
little bit more for their prescription cocktails, and fully restored funding for 4-year old kindergarten.
Then he had the stones to say this..." [this] will strip municipalities of local control and force painful cuts at Wisconsin schools." What an absolute crock. The property tax freeze was the ultimate in local control. If the people think that their taxes need to go up, they can vote on it in a referendum.
So now, according to the borderline communist paper in town...
" The nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau has estimated property taxes could increase as much as 9.4% as local governments and schools try to make up the cuts Doyle had proposed in his version of the budget in February.
The agency estimates the average property tax bill would have increased 1% in December under the Republican-controlled Legislature' s proposal, which Doyle vetoed."
Hopefully the Senate will do their job and override this ape with a law degree.
