Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Cool New Alabama Gov. says only Christians are his brothers and sisters

Do these troglodytes take classes in how to make the South look bad?

The first amendment certainly gives you the right to believe that everyone whose religious beliefs differ from yours will spend eternity dogpaddling around in a lake of fire and brimstone. But how does a guy like that get elected governor?

Evidently he hasn't learned that being honest about what you believe, especially if you are a Christian, won't get you anywhere in politics.

His beliefs are not uncommon among most Christians, at least when referring to "brothers and sisters" in a religious sense--as he obviously was.

I may agree he could have chosen a better time and place to voice his views, but I think it's more "over the top" to call the man a "troglodyte" for nothing more than being honest about his religious beliefs.

I'd like to see a lot more honesty in politics myself. Personally I don't think that reflects badly on the man, Alabama, or the South in general.

He has since apoligized for the remarks.

Now does anyone really believe that apology? I don't I'd would have more respect if he had just said he meant what he said. He obviously meant it when he said it.

He proably includes alot of "Christians" in that statement to.

It's hard to find a person that really says what he believes. I wonder how many of really say what we believe and just don't say because we are afraid of what others may think?

I'll accept it. He knows he put his foot in his mouth.

Everyone is entitled to his own personal religious beliefs, but a governor is supposed to be everyone's governor. He shouldn't be dividing the people he serves into his brothers/sisters and non-brothers/sisters.

I agree. He probably is sorry for offending anyone, but I'd say his position hasn't changed. If he's Baptist (maybe, since he was speaking at a Baptist church building), the view he voiced is standard--again, from a religious standpoint.

I don't think that's what he was doing at all. The way I read it, when he said that he wasn't speaking as a governor, but rather voicing his religious beliefs.

I think it's easy to figure out from a logical standpoint. What governor honestly looks at every citizen of the state they serve as a brother or sister? Just a case of wrong place, wrong time IMO.

Cripes people ! He dont' have to be your brother or your sister to be a good governor.
The fact he can attest to having 'brothers and sisters' in faith makes him, in my opinion, a BETTER governor than some of the pukes you see currently festering in state houses across the nation...they have NO brothers or sisters...which is worse ? I'll take the one with the 'extended family'...it's the PC machine that makes these people lie about stuff like this...so he said something genuine, and according to his faith...he is excoriated and he's forced to repudiate his honest statement. PC makes liars out of everyone.

In like vein, to you believe that the Catholic Church should publicly excommunicate catholic politicians who support Abortion ? Last I heard, the Church's position has not changed in this matter....so if a POS like Gov.Cuomo who professes to be a Roman Catholic and Pro-Abortion supporter, is he to be trusted ? Do we let him lie about his religious affiliation or about whether his position on abortion is internally truthful or just a tool to get him elected ?

Bah ! Road Apples !

I think he made a very poorly worded statement. He should realize that he is governor of the whole state and try more to emphasize sameness then to stress differences among his electorate.

He's not a bigot but he stuck his foot in it.

My sentiments exactly. He's making a political speech standing behind a podium with the governor's seal. This is neither the time nor the place to start preaching about his Christian brothers and sisters, the Holy Spirit living within you, etc.

I can respect someone who would practice his faith in his actions as governor. But he should understand when making political speeches that many people do not share his particular religious views.

Exactly. Unlike most public figures and upper level politicians, he remained honest and true to his faith...and got lambasted for it.

Says you--someone who will defend the likes of jerimiah wright. Obviously there's a lot of folks "up North" who don't share Southern morals. I figure most of his constituents down here understood what he meant, and agree. I will concede that he should have picked a better time and place, but his mistake isn't nearly worthy of the garbage thrown at him over it.

I ask again--what governor's have stated that they consider the citizens of the state they govern to be their brothers and sisters? Anyone? A guy that considers some of them to be that close to him is a "troglodyte", but those who don't proclaim to be that close to any of their electorate are just fine and dandy? And you call us backwards?

That is another question I'd like to see answered. Personally I'd have a lot more respect for the Catholic religion if they would do such, but unfortunately they are a pollitical machine as much as a religious one, and such will never happen to a high-profile figure like cuomo. They aren't alone though--the Southern Baptist Association refused to take action on bill clinton some years ago. Just goes to show you that a certain Jewish carpenter knew what He was talking about when He said to render unto Ceasar what is Ceasar's, and to God what is God's. Basically, keep the two separated. Politics corrupts religion, just like most everything else it touches.
