Davis up for recall! Maybe there is hope for California!
I just read that the citizens of the People' s Republik of Kalifornia have finally grown some sense and managed to get Davis recalled. Sounds like his last day in office could be as early as September. I just hope the Kalifornians take advantage of this opportunity to elect a decent and effective leader, but considering they elected this bozo TWICE I wouldn' t be surprized if they elected someone just as bad.
I hope Arnold runs because I think he' ll win if he does. Maybe he can " terminate" some of the bleeding-heart commie liberal freaks they have running that state now. He he!
RE: Davis up for recall! Maybe there is hope for California!
I' d have to dissent with most of my conservative bretheren on this one.
Gray Davis has been a leftie his entire term in office. You expect me to believe that all of a sudden people realized that he' s probably going to raise taxes and spending? If so, those people are the idiots, not Gray Davis. The voters knew what he stood for when they elected him, and I don' t think his conduct in office justifies a recall.
Recalls are supposed to be used when officeholders commit crimes or engage in gross misconduct in office. Not simply because you didn' t like the outcome of an election.
Remember when some of us and the NRA always says that what begins in California spreads to the rest of the nation? The undermining of elections and majority votes is something that I don' t wish to see widespread.

Carp, it would' nt bother me a bit to see the jokers thats not and don' t know how to handle their job to get the boot, maybe this will open their eyes and let them know they can be put out for a poor job. I wish we could recall this stinking holden of Mo., all he has done is veto legislation

RE: Davis up for recall! Maybe there is hope for California!
I think that the people have every right to fire an elected official for any reason the people want, and not just for " high crimes and misdemeanors." I think people have forgotten that the elected officials work for the people, and not for themselves, which means they are bound to do the will of their constituants. By allowing the people to recall their elected officials and effectively fire them for doing an unsatisfactory job is a good thing because it helps motivate those elected officials to keep promises, work hard in the intererests of their constituants, and tread lightly.
It' s time we stop thinking of our elected legislators as " powerful people," because to do so displaces the true power base in this country. It is the voter who holds power, while those they elect are mearly the focus of that power in the government. The reason there is so much lying, deceit and corruption in our government is because the people have little direct redress when their politician goes south. Once elected, often on lies or deception, the politician has basically a free ride until his term is up because, unless he does something so greivous that his colleges impeach him which is very unlikely, the voters would have to wait and suffer until the next election comes up.
With the recall system in place, it gives the voters more direct control over the politicians. Right now, in most places, voters don' t have this ability to hold their legislators directly responsible for their actions or incompetence. Or it' s far too difficult to do because it relies on the action of the politician' s fellow politicians, many of whom may be as bad as and supportive of the one whos head is on the block. Regardless, without recall power for the people, politicians know that as long as they can get elected they can do pretty much whatever they want until their term is up despite the will of the people. For people in high places, like governors, this means that they can have at least four years of free reign before being held accountable. With the recall system, the people can fire a legislator before too much damage is done.
If the people of Kalifornia recall Davis then it' s a sign that our system is working like it ought to, in the best interest of the people, not the politicians.
RE: Davis up for recall! Maybe there is hope for California!
Actually Carp, it' s worse than you think but boy am I smiling a whole lot about it. While grayout davis is about as corrupt as they come, the democratic controlled legislature has been passing all of thiese excessive budgets and spent us into this financial problem. grayout just approved those foolish budgets. Although the legislature is just as much at fault, there does not seem to be the level of frustration with them as there is with davis. Even now as his recall vote has been certified to proceed, davis has filed a lawsuit to delay or obstruct the process. His approval rating is somewhere around 25% and is the lowest of any California governor in 82 years. He cvontinues to do things like this that just fuel the fire and all but guarantee he will be recalled in the special election coming up this fall.
His continuous fundraising, perceived conflicts of interest and ethics problems are all responsible for this recall. He publicly said our deficit was much lower than it really was before the election and has opposed almost all budget cuts to help reduce the deficit. Instead, he has proposed raising taxes, taking out $Billions in bonds and has already allowed or possibly directed his political appointee at the DMV to triple our vehicle registration fees to help balance the budget deficit. People are flaming mad about that since we already pay fairly stiff DMV fees (I pay $160 for a 94 Chevy pickup). Even many democrats are beginning to think that Davis is out of touch or just plain out to lunch.
The recall is a procedure allowed for by California law and does not require any wrongdoing, malfeasance or even just poor job performance. It is an initiative process that is actually done by any citizen who follows the procedures. It is interesting in that it doesn' t require any wrongdoing unlike an impeachment procedure that would have to be conducted by the legislature. In some ways, this is citizen government at its' operative best since it requires a lot of citizens to proceed with the recall and actually would be the will of the people.
I can understand and partly agree that it does establish a dangerous precedent for the rest of the country. Other states would have to pass this type of legislation for recalls to be a process in their states. While those states' legislatures' members might not want to pass such legislation out of concern for political survival, a popular uprising or even an initiative process if that is allowed in different states might force the issue.
p.s. Almost forgot fng. Cruz Bustamante would have to run in the special recall election if he wants to be governor. He does not automatically replace davis if davis is recalled as the same election also elects a new governor to serve the remainder of davis' term. I think Bustamante and most other democrats are trying to stand behind davis so as to help him try to stave off the recall. In doing so, they are losing valuable campaign time to get one of their # better known and possibly in a position to win as a replacement governor.
The election has 2 items to be voted on.
1. Should davis be recalled?
2. Who should replace davis as governor?

For those of you interested in some of the #' s on the recall and the current status, here' s a pasted copy of an email from the recall davis campaign.
Quote:
The qualification of the Davis Recall will be all over the press in the morning, but I wanted to say a special thank you to all of you who made history today!
Secretary of State Shelley called a late press conference today [instead of the one he wanted to have tomorrow morning] to announce that the recall of Governor Davis had qualified. The election must now be held on September 23rd, September 30th or October 7th! Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante will announce the date on Thursday.
The Secretary of State announced that the 58 counties reported 1,651,191 signatures submitted with an astonishing 1,356,408 VALID signatures. That is a validation rate of over 82% which is unheard of in recent years. This also makes this the MOST signtures ever collected in California and don' t forget, you did it in just over 100 days and we are STILL getting more signatures in our office. Our legal deadline for collecting signatures was not until September 2nd.
>From all of us here at the Davis Recall Committee, all we can say is THANK YOU and congratulations!
Ted Costa, Chairman & Proponent, Davis Recall Committee

I thought that if recalled, Cruz would simply " cruise" into the spot until an election was held.
RE: Davis up for recall! Maybe there is hope for California!
No, davis is still governor until he is officially recalled. In the same election and on the same ballot, a new governor is elected. It' s definitely a short transition period (like no time at all) and you can bet the new governor will not want cruz messing up anything since cruz has been so involved in davis' dealings.
