President Obama spoke of the need for sacrifice last week when he announced a two-year pay freeze for federal employees.
But feds won't be too terribly deprived in 2011 and 2012. Despite the freeze, some 1.1 million employees will receive more than $2.5 billion in raises during that period.
Congress is expected to approve Obama's proposal, which cancels only cost-of-living adjustments for two years. Regularly scheduled step increases for the 1.4 million General Schedule employees — who make up two-thirds of the civilian work force — will continue. The size of those increases ranges from 2.6 percent to 3.3 percent and by law kick in every one, two or three years, depending on an employee's time in grade.

The federal government is huge bloated and unresponsive bureaucracy that is growing by leaps and bounds. The median wage of federal employees is about 50 percent more than similar jobs in the private sector. The federal government wants to hire at least 270,000 new employees in the next three years.
Federal agencies are very picky who they hire too. In some agencies a white male cannot get hired regardless of his qualifications. Case in point the US Forest Service.
The U.S. federal government will hire 300,000 to 400,000 new workers in the next few years. "Fiscal year 2011's budget reflects the intent to hire more federal employees as soon as possible," writes Bridget Mintz Testa on Workforce.com. Testa also notes the government plans "dramatic changes in recruiting practices," such as eliminating lengthy "knowledge, skills, abilities" (KSA) essays early in the application process.

Don't go there... Please... The horrible memories of my layoff as a contractor with the gov't are still there. When they rehired (or insourced - I think the term is) people back, I will give you 3 guesses as to what race they hired back, regardless of qualifications, and who they threw under the bus.

My brother refused a job at NASA due to the fact he would be an affirmative action employee. He took the offer as an insult. Especially since we went to college with another guy, who was applying for the same job, with a lot more qualifications. When Michael asked why he was offered the job over the other guy, they said nothing. He refused the position, and as he told me, "I can't believe they want me to be one of their token n@#$#@!"

Their pay were raised high already. Two years freeze means little for them.
