Cool Check this out before you eat that fish...

It seems that a tremendous amount of the fish in our grocery stores and restaurants comes from Asia. And a substantial amount of it is contaminated with various toxic substances.

I just bouight some frozen pinks, individually frozen fillets, just right for us. They say "wild caught." But it's from China. I wonder. Salmon is supposed to be healthy, but now I'm not so sure.

I checked a can of Chicken of the Sea pink salmon. I sort of assumed it was from the Northwest U.S. Nope, it's from Thailand.

I couldn't find a country of origin on the canned tuna, but they only come from the ocean, so I guess they're okay.

Yuck!

Maybe the vegetarians have a point after all.

The article says U.S. seafood is perfectly safe. Apparently I'll have to start reading labels more closely.

I don't eat fish. Love to catch the little suckers but not fond of eating them. I love the raw tuna though. I prefer to stick with shellfish if I go seafood. That stuff I know is locally caught.

Burnie, truth be told, I heard you are so old, you were fishing the river bank when Moses parted the red sea. I have to know, do they still test the same?

I love fish and we eat it all the time. I eat fresh caught out of our lake and just about every type of fish at the market. It needs to be fresh before i will cook or eat it. I haven't been sick yet from eating fish.

generally, fish is good and healthy for you. Locally, fresh fish is generally good to eat with exception of east-coast Striped Bass (which has a high toxin level in body fat) and
tuna and swordfish, which both have high levels of naturally-occurring mercury in the flesh...once a week...twice a month max.

Salmon, Tilapia, and in general, farm-raised fish is highest in toxins, due to the environment they are grown in. Wild-caught is generally much better than farmed...

I used to like Mackerel in tomato sauce with peas, onions, potatoes and a touch of wine in the sauce...I've not even seen a mackerel at the market for years...used to catch like,
100-150 of 'em on hook and line from the head boats in Brooklyn, but soon as the purse-seiners got into the act, populations collapsed...I don't even think they fish for them recreationally anymore....it's a shame.

I'm lucky, at least when it comes to freshwater fish. My family has ponds with catfish, bass, bream, and crappie; and we have creeks and waterways everywhere with all of those plus walleye pike (you got to know what you are doing to catch those though) and an assortment of other fish.

If we are really craving shrimp and/or oysters, we tend to make a road trip to LA and buy them straight off the boats. I think most of our stuff comes from the LA/MS coast anyhow.

Sweet.....when I lived in brooklyn, used to go to the boats in Sheepshead bay and get fresh fish from there (caught same day),
on those rare days I did not catch 'em myself. When I moved to NJ, I would fish in Lake Hopatcong for bass and perch, but then people told me the fish has chemicals in it because the surrounding homes are using the lake for wastewater...who knows...so I stopped fishing there. I'm a saltwater guy and I don't know anything about freshwater fishing...so I'm high and dry but for a couple times a year when I make my pilgrammage back to brooklyn or Long Island. Next move will be to Florida with a boat purchase soon after....then I'll be back on the salt...

The solution!! I discovered that the fresh fish counter shows the country of origin for all the seafood and most of it comes from the USA or Canada. I bought some nice catfish, "Farm Raised in the USA."

Farm raised defeats the purpose of eating fish in the first place, ie good fats....omega 3's etc...are non-existent in farm raised anything, only found in wild fish...

and why is there mercury etc...in fish? ie pollution that ends up in our oceans and in our fish...

checkout that documentary on china/dolphin "the cove" talks about china killing/poisoning it's own people, dolphin have super high mercury levels...they're selling dolphin as whale or some other sushi etc...people are having birth defects etc...from the accumulation of mercury....
