This is nothing new. Disturbing, but not new. It occurred before the bailouts and will likely continue after this "outing".
Not much different than construction workers having their lunch in a bag or a few tokes on break. It's wrong for sure.
A local radio DJ in Detroit today was trying to soften it by pointing out that CEO's or highly paid exec's do it with their martinis and vicodin before they close deals or try cases .. the big reason this seems so much more wrong (to some) is that these auto grunts are building our cars that we hope will be safe. The exec's and lawyers and accountants slide by because of the culture of their world. It's just way more accepted in some lines of work.
If you are driving a hi-lo, operating a plane, repairing helicopters or building cars, among many other critical jobs, there is no room for being in an altered state. But this is nothing new.
I'm sure we've all repeated over the years why we don't want cars built on Monday or Friday. Seems the day of the week isn't the issue
The only thing wrong with it is the fact our tax dollars were stolen along with Bond holders in order to prop up this crap. GM and Chrysler should have been a paragraph in a school book by now!

Agreed,
And I just want to point out that I was no way giving a pass to the CEO's and such who participate in the same type thing ...Morally we can probably all see the parallel. But when my money is being stolen in so many ways, it is more than exasperating.
If somebody wants to get hammered on their own time and at least isn't driving drunk, thats one thing... but while on the clock, with my stolen money paying for the break, I don't think so.
I was LMAO when the reporter sneaked up and the auto workers scurried away in all directions. That several of them subjected themselves to being filmed driving under the influence, though, is ridiculous. If I had law enforcement jurisdiction there, I would use it and work something out with the DA and a local judge. Make an example out of them.
FYI, military protocol says you can't be drunk while on duty, that doesn't mean you can enjoy a beer or two at lunch time.

Yeah, unions will protect them. And as 8mm/06 pointed out, this has been going on in Detroit (and elsewhere) for many years. I remember talking to a guy about 20 years ago regarding this same subject - he was astounded when after he started working in a plant how many people went to the parking lot on their breaks to toke and drink.
