Default In manufacturing, we're still making it

Here you go Hockeydad or whatever your name in this week. Read and learn that our manufacturing in the USA is still growing, not decreasing except for the dip due to recession.

In 1979 there were 19.6 million manufacturing jobs in the USA. In 2009 there were 11.7 million manufacturing jobs in the USA.

Quote:
The manufacturing sector of the U.S. economy has experienced substantial job losses over the past several years. In January 2004, the number of such jobs stood at 14.3 million, down by 3.0 million jobs, or 17.5 percent, since July 2000 and about 5.2 million since the historical peak in 1979. Employment in manufacturing was its lowest since July 1950 (see Figure 1).

So what? It's due to automation, falcon. Do you want to outlaw robotics? Furthermore, if we didn't automate, wages wouldn't increase. Is that a good idea?

Most of the apparel manufacturing, all of the shoe manufacturing and nearly all the steel mills went away overseas. Some automation.

FM, you and I agree on most stuff...but do you really think much is still made here in the USA? I mean, my Irish Setter boots are even made in China...pretty much everything I purchase for my business is also stamped with another countries name on it...

don't get me started on this issue...

sure we still make some stuff.

lots of quality jobs for non-college educated folks have been shipped overseas, it may eventually come back, since from everything i hear is the quality in china is not up to par/quality like it is here, of course cheaper is cheaper.

the USA needs to make products in the USA.

i recently heard the us border patrol's uniforms are made in mexico....nice, real nice.

once every american has a quality good paying job who wants one, then I think we can worry about shipping jobs overseas.

Take a trip to harbor freight tools and you can even get USA flags made in China.

So what? Did you guys even read the article? We set an all time record output in manufacturing in 2009, just before our recession. 1.7 trillion. It's not that we are making less, we are making more with less people. It's just the same way farming went 100 years ago. You can't fight it.

I have yet to hear one of you who responded to my thread explain why making everyone pay more for the item they wish to buy is good for them. You better be careful with your answer. If you try to make that claim, you need to explain why they shouldn't pay at least 10% of their income in income tax.

Didn't say that...I'd rather see this country become a little more like China and be business friendly...less regs, get rid of the EPA, etc...

I can't blame countries for going overseas, I'm just a small business guy and am already tired of all the Government BS, couldn't imaging all the red tape and headaches with a big corp!!
