A Dearborn, MI high school is having night football practice during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. The school administration has gone out of their way to accomodate the Muslims on the football team. Wonder what the administration has done to accomodate their Christian and Jewish students?
The moonlight practice is tailored for Restum and fellow teammates who make up a majority of the Fordson High School squad in the large Arab community of Dearborn. It's a way for the players to practice football and their faith, and balance the fasting common during the 30-day holy month of that started last week.
How do they accommodate the Christians on the team? Probably by not having practice on Sunday.
That article perfectly illustrates why the Big Ten(11)(12) will never be as good as the SEC. Their priorities are all wrong up there. When I played football, our church had bible study on Thursday night instead of the traditional western Christian bible study night of Wednesday. Our football games were also on Thursday night. It's what brought our church up to traditional standard: bible study was moved to Wednesday night so it wouldn't interfere with football. And up there they're rearranging the football schedule to conform to religious standards? Where are their priorities?
Seriously, though, the article says that a majority of the team are Muslims. In that case, I don't see moving practice to night during Ramadan as being a PC move. I see it as being a move of necessity.

Well, when a chunk of your team is going to be missed, you do what you have to do to keep it together. Don't like it? Recruit new players.

Maybe no one has told them the football was made out of pig skin, like I never told the ones I invited to a cook out the beans had a ham hock in it!!!! True by the way.
Dearborn Fordson High opens it's 2010 football season this Friday (8-27) @ Detroit Catholic Central. I'll take DCC minus 10. There was another matter which concerned me about Fordson being able to run doubles at night. The other teams had to practice in the "heat" of the day, 85-90, the wear and tear of heat stress that Fordson didn't endure. Also, prolonged practice "under the lights" which other teams didn't get the advantage of. Their entire schedule is played at night. The "O" and "D" can get used to the ball coming in and out of the glare of the lights, and the background at night. Just a observation.

What's stopping all other teams from practicing at night for the other reasons you mentioned (heat, lights)? Irrespective of the religious reasons, the benefits you mention make perfect sense ... so I wonder why others don't take advantage of it. Seems others should be doing the night thing regularly for the other reasons you point out.
