Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default The Founding Fathers Were deists!

Ok, not really, but that claim used to be made on this board every so often, until someone presented the facts--since then, I don't remember it being made again.

My problem is I don't remember the title of that thread, or who presented the facts to debunk the myth that is the title of this thread.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Chad

You can start with the Jefferson Bible. LOL

5 minutes of reading our early history aught to do it.

I don't know what they were. Men for ages have lied, misrepresented the truth, or simply kept silent for a variety of reasons, particularly when it comes to politics. I don't care what the founders thought about God and religion. All I care about is that they left us the greatest country in the world, and that it has survived long enough for us to enjoy. Arguing about the deepest beliefs of men long dead is not only a waste of time, but it can be counterproductive as well.

I can't cite a reference to that post but I can vouch for its existence because I read it. I don't remember the details, but apparently most of the "founding fathers" were members of established churches. Of course we can't know how committed they were to the teachings of any church, but to claim that they were deists is incorrect.

I do think that, recognizing the great diversity of religious beliefs in this country, they endeavored to make sure that no particular religious doctrine became mandatory here, that citizens would be free to practice whatever religious faith they preferred, and that no person would have to hold any particular faith as a prerequisite to political office. While they felt free to acknowledge the existence of a Creator, I think they meant government to be a public matter and religion to be a private matter.

I learned not too long ago, some representatives from certain states had to profess their believe in God before they were allowed to go and take part. It's on my list of things I need to go study more about and today I need to buy another book for my trip this week. Maybe I'll look in that direction again.

Article Six of the U.S. Constitution specifically prohibits any type of religious test to hold public office in the United States. It does not matter what the state constitutions say. Any provision in a state constitution that violates the U.S. Constitution in null and void and can not be enforced. The 14th, 15th and 16th Amendments make it clear that the U.S. Constitution, not the state constitutions, is the final authority.

FYI. Founding Fathers were pre-Constitution.

What? The Constitution above all others is the document that "founded" the nation we have today so what exactly do you mean here?

If you google "founding fathers quotes on religion," you'll find sites with quotes supporting the conclusion that they were mostly deists, and you'll find sites with quotes supporting the conclusion that they were mostly Christians...

Here's one supporting the "Christian" conclusion:

If you were take some quotes from me, in my life, you would have concluded I was a deist, and if you would have taken other quotes, you would have concluded I was a Christian.

There were many evangelicals in the bunch. Anyone that has traveled any to the original 13 colonies will find the cornerstone of any historical town is the Christian Church. Not a deist church, not a muslim mosque, not a not even a mormon temple.

So much a Christian belief, mormons decided to pack up and head west.
