Specifically the chosen few assigned to protect the POTUS.
Are they chosen by the POTUS or are they assigned by the DHS?
Can they decline or must they accept the presidential assignemnt?
Because for the life of me I can not see how anyone would willingly put their life on the line for someone like Obama. I know if given the option I would decline the position even if it meant loosing my job all together. There are other far more honorable jobs out there. Like picking up dog crap off of the city streets.

I do not think you seriously need to worry about being asked to assume the responsibility of protecting the President. I can not really imagine that any President would want someone as lacking in courage and sense of duty as you to serve your country in the Secret Service.
As an Army EOD guy i used to support the USSS. Everywhere the POTUS, VP or other dignataries go there are lots of military EOD folks in civilian clothes.
Got to know some of those SS folks pretty well: While many of them did not personally like the principal they were charged with protecting; every one of them would put their lives on the line in order to protect him/her.
Like it or not, Obama is POTUS because the voters of the US put him in that job. He deserves the same protection that any president is entitled to.
So, does anyone know if they must take the positions or can they decline?

And what would you know about honor, duty and courage?

I happen to know a person in this position. They can transfer to a new unit, or quit. Lots of different divisions in the Secret Service. But from conversation, most strive at desiring this position no matter who the president is. Its not a grind job 9-5 for these guys like working mcdonalds, its thier profession. And just like any profession, last thing you want is to be bad at your job.
They used to be under the Treasury Department until the DHS took them over. I've met a few guys and they are very professional. My understanding is that agents actually apply or put in for the position within the SS. Their supervisors or bosses then select them on a competitive basis. I guess an agent could ask to be reassigned if they absolutely couldn't stand working for the current President. I don't know if that has happened or not.
They probably want to stay at that pinnacle in their profession and ride out an unpopular President. I would also guess that many of them are like members of our armed services. They may not like, agree with or have voted for the current President but they are still going to do their job to the best of their ability because of pride and loyalty to our country.

When you have a president that is systematically dismantling this country one step at a time like no other in United States history... my pride and loyalty to our country would let him go it alone.

Before retiring and going to medical school I spent 23 years as a Foreign Service Officer, two of those years were in Iraq, and had to live through wars, coups and specific threats of assisination while working for American interests.
I do not know specifically about the Secret Service but I do know that in the Foreign Service, that on the day we are commissioned, we take an oath to serve anywhere in the world and in whatever capacity we are assigned. We pledge to subordinate our desires to the needs of the Service, and we are expected to live up to our oath no matter how difficult or dangerous the needs of the Service might be. And it is dangerous, one only has to look at the entire wall at the entrance to the State Department engraved with the names of Foreign Service Officers who have died in the line of duty to realize this. At the CIA building the wall just has stars since even in death the names of fallen CIA officers can not be revealed.
Foreign Service Officers are like military officers, we are expected to obey any lawful order we receive from a superior, even if it could result in our deaths. I would be very surprised if the Secret Service were any different.
