Default Coyote attacks keep children indoors in N.Y.C. suburb

"Officers and wildlife experts have been authorized to shoot the coyotes on sight and to kill any that are trapped, Rye Police Chief William Connors said."

Sounds good doesn't it except that a guy with a cc just shot at some fleeing thieves and was arrested for doing so. It was a big deal and the guy painted as the bad guy. I wonder if a guy with a cc takes a shot at the yotes how he'll fair. If I was the guy busted for trying to stop some thieves I'd be all over this incident. I doubt those thieves were as hard to target as these yotes will be. Thieves were ripping off some Verizon store. Too bad they weren't stealing candy from a kid.

I'd bet these yotes were shoved out of their area by wolves.

Yep, just as i suspected; NY state has a hunting season for coyotes. Season runs from 1 October through 28 March. Got to stop killing the fuzzy loveable critters in the spring so they can raise more coyotes. There is no open season on coyotes in NY City.

no, no open season on coyotes in NYC....if there were open season on SKUNKS the place'd be deserted ! Why don't we just reintroduce a natural predator of the coyote to reduce it's numbers ? Say....VELOCIRAPTORS !

NY has a season for yotes, news to me. I thought they were game 24/7 365.

The hypocrisy I'm keying in on is the Chief is giving an order to shot to kill the yotes when a guy with a cc tried to stop a robbery the same way.

I would like the country to get on the same page. See things for what they are.

Dogs and people are handled differently. I don't see much difference between a coyote, and a mutant beating an old lady for her pension check, and how to solve that problem but that's just me. The only difference I see, is that a coyote does what coyotes do...they must. Humans are instilled with the knowledge of right and wrong and there are precious few times when we do something and dont know the difference ! Plus, humans act out of
malice...something a coyote never does.

And congress members (and Obama) from that general area keep wanting to dump wolves in the back yards of those out west..

well, a gut-pile laced with strychnine would reduce their numbers some...and without the noise associated with a gunshot.... Wolf reintroduction is a bad idea...maybe if somebody rounded up 50 or so, and let 'em loose near the Capital ?

Problem is that strychnine kills for more than one generation. Any creature that eats the poisoned animal will die. i grew up in WV. A neighbor put out strychnine for dogs that were killing his sheep. There were dead buzzards, crows, ravens, skunks, possums and foxes all over the place. Xylitol is an artificial sweetner. It takes milligrams to kill any dog type animal.

I have a friend from college who controls coyotes and other dog like animals on her ranch in WY using Russian wolf hounds. It is a pleasure to watch those dogs at work in pairs. One dog hits the coyote and bowls it over. The other grabs the coyote by the throat before it can get up.

Bill Clinton and Bruce Babbit should be put in a pen with several wild boar hogs for re-introducing wolves to the northwest.

ok so I'm a dumb city-boy. But the idea is a sound one....Xylitol sounds like a WONDERFUL solution...and one can put it in their morning coffee too !

I"ve been 'jonesing' for some Irish Wolf Hounds but first have to get a bigger spread. Those are large animals and they'll cover ground faster than anything I've ever seen. Good solution !

In that hog pen, I'd include anybody who advocated for wolf reintroduction. Man has spent generations attempting to eradicate this predator and now feel-good idiots reintroduce 'em back into the wild, some of 'em on range land. What's next ? Bubonic plague ?

There was a thread in the predator (Wildlife Managememt) section that seemed to dissappear after a Xylitol link was posted in it, as with a thread on huntingwashington.com also. Let's see what happens here.
