State troopers say a man and woman injured early Friday morning in a motorcycle wreck were both naked when the bike they were on veered off Meadowview Road in Jacksonville.
................................................
Gunnery Sgt. Steven Sheals, 38, of Meadowview Road, and his passenger, Jennifer Smith, 30, of Parnell Road in Hubert, were thrown from the motorcycle when it crashed. A trooper said the motorcycle was traveling east on Meadowview, toward Sheals’ home, when he failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the road into a ditch.
.....................................
Sheals is an explosive ordnance disposal technician with EOD Company, 8th Engineer Support Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 25, 2nd Marine Logistics Group. He entered the Marine Corps in January 1992 and was promoted to his current rank of gunnery sergeant in June 2007. He has been with his present unit since February 2008.

Sheals has been charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, driving without a license, license revoked, expired inspection, no insurance and no helmet, according to authorities.
Smith was treated at Onslow Memorial Hospital, and Sheals was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Hospital, authorities said. Sheals is listed in fair condition, according to New Hanover Regional Hospital officials.
Yep, in true EOD fashion they were riding the motorcycle drunk and naked. Too bad they had a wreck.
Too bad he lacks the judgment and intellect to avoid driving while drunk. Fortunately, he didn't kill his "girlfriend" or some innocent third party. Idiot.
What's this do to his chances of getting that Master Sergeant's stripe?

I guess the only thing they were doing legally was being naked.

Losing rank is not likely for a Staff NCO. It would take at least a Special Court Martial to justify reducing a SNCO. And for what he did, that's not likely. He'll probably get Non-Judicial Punishment and depending on his time in service, not be eligible for selection to the next rank. But I have seen Marines bounce back from crazier stuff than that and get selected to the next rank. But being that this got national attention, it's not looking very good for him.
