but po' boy Obammy's been on the case since day one !

So, who's the pinata ? BP or the Administration. Spilling the oil is not a malicious
act....the government's refusal to act, is. At the very least, it is incompetence verging on malfeasance.

Just what is it that you think the Government can do to stop the spill that it is not already doing? The U.S. Government does not explore for or produce oil and has no technology or special capabilities that would be useful in plugging the well. The only thing that the Government can do is pressure BP to make a stronger effort to seal the well and make sure that BP is held financially responsible for the disaster through the imposition of heavy fines and enforce requirements that all damaged parties be made whole by BP.

He could have:

1. Accepted help from the Netherlands when they offered it shortly after the accident. The Dutch, experienced in the oil business, offered prompt help for oil skimming booms and plans to create barriers to stop the oil from infiltrating into wetland areas.

2. Suspended the Jones Act, as President Bush did after Katrina, to allow foreign vessels into American waters to assist with recovery without having to swap ships and transfer equipment onto American flagged vessels.

3. Suspended the Davis-Bacon prevailing wage laws, as President Bush did after Katrina, to allow rapid deployment of new workers to help with containment efforts.

4. Suspended FEMA contracting and bidding rules, as President Bush did after Katrina, to allow a more rapid assignment of contracts to assist with the recovery effort.

5. Allowed coastal governors to immediately begin dredging to create barrier islands.

6. Talked to BP's CEO to establish initial metrics for progress to gauge BP's response so the federal government would have ascertainable metrics to determine when federal intervention was needed. Heck, he should have talked to BP's CEO period.

7. Not imposed a blanket deep water drilling moratorium, further crippling economies in coastal communities.

8. Talked to experts about how to fix the problem instead of trying to figure out whose "ass to kick."

9. Not waited to act lest he be seen as owning the situation. Guess what? He owns it now so why is he still on the golf course?

10. Not wasted time trying to blame the accident on George Bush before diving in to take responsibility.

And, FYI: Heavy fines just go into the government's coffers. They do nothing to help those who have been damaged. And, what about those harmed by Obama's actions, i.e. put out of work by the drilling moratorium? Why should BP be liable to them, when it is Obama who put them out of work? And what about peripheral businesses who are losing revenues because those workers are idled? That's on BHO...

This kind of ridiculousness was what happened under Bush and I really don't have to mention it. Both acts were in some part avoidable. Some people prepare for things like this, some are more concerned with vices.

Under Bush and because of the out cry of liberals government grew, republicans are doing the same. Can't tell the players from the score card

As for myself I'm for limited government, they can stay out of it, but they won't. Time for a government take over of big oil. It appears to late for big oil to make friends with the largest voting block in this country and now BP is suspending payments to those who consider them friends, their share holders.

...Deleted by CalHunter... What has the government DONE TO REMEDIATE ????
THAT"S WHERE THE GOVERNMENT'S RESPONSIBILITY AND CULPABILITY LIE !!!! YOu think I'd blame a lightning strike on the president ? But you can bet the family jewels I'll blame him if he lets the resulting fire burn down the whole frikkin county for lack of action !! And that's what's happened. Hand wringing and finger pointing and posturing. Turned down lots of international help. Refused to allow lots of things to happen. They need to let BP do what they do, with the technology at hand. If Bumbling Barry actually had a notion to help (rather than NOT allowing a good emergency to waste !), he might assemble petrochemical and drilling engineers TO ASSIST BP in plugging the leak....nope...nun-a-that either. So while we have government criminality in allowing BP to run a substandard well cap, and while we have BP culpable in knowingly deploying a modified well cap (or whatever it's called) which may have resulting in this blowout, THE PRESIDENT and HIS ADMINISTRATION bear culpability in not mustering and MANAGING REMEDIATION efforts. This is why YOU DON"T ELECT AN EFFING COMMUNITY ORGANIZER TO RUN A NATION !!!!

The President just obtained agreement from BP to set up a $20 billion trust fund to be administered by a third party to compensate people and businesses injured by spill. The $20 billion is not a cap and more might have to be paid by BP if damages exceed this amount. Applicants whose claims are denied will have to option to appeal while BP has waived any right to challenge a claim that is approved. BP also agreed to pay $100 million to compensate oil workers affected by the 6 month deep water drilling moratorium. An official apology was also obtained from the chairman of BP.

The President took a hard line with BP and forced them to give in completely on every issue. Americans will be made whole at BPs expense. The President deserves kudos for his achievement.

An official apology? Well hell that means Obama is off the hook, the spill is stopped and everyone can go home and be happy again. Yeah that Barry... hes such a tough guy... hes working real hard for us peons.

Will Nazi Pelosi and Michelle Bachman now join hands and lead both chambers in an emotional rendition of Kumbayah?

and that's the biggest crapbag load of malarkey I've ever heard.
WHAT DOES IT DO TO SATISFY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S RESPONSIBILITY BY LAW TO SEE THE CLEANUP IS DONE ??? What about all those plumes of oil that have yet to make landfall ?
This blithering moron has just gotten BP to dump a boatload of cash (which they can apparently afford without too much problem it seems) to buy it's way out of the disaster. Sure, they'll fix it, but that's because nobody else can fix an oil disaster besides an oil company. There is an official back-slapping ceremony that was on all the TV shows last night but nobody's doing a thing about remediating the spill. Sure, kudos to buy everybody out with beaucoup bucks...that's what the socialists want. I'd love to see who's gonna admin that 20bn escrow account...Barney Frank maybe ? Chris Dodd perhaps ? Look....it goes a long way to help affected people in the area but not one bit of help to managing the cleanup effort which is just as big a deal as paying off shrimpers.
The fact is, is that the biggest problem is not a mile down on the ocean floor, it's sitting in a cushy leather chair in Washington DC and NOT doing his job...pure imcompetence and nothing more. Once again, it's the reason you elect an EXECUTIVE to the highest office in the land, not a community organizer.

The President can not plug the spill at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, only an oil company with the right technology, experience and expertise can do that, if it can be done at all. What a president can and should do is hold the offending party legally and financially responsible and make sure that injured Americans are fully compensated and President Obama has accomplished that. When Congress recently wrote a letter to BP demanding the establishment of a $20 billion escrow fund they were rebuffed by BP. When the BP executives were confronted face to face by the President they changed their tune and agreed to the fund and more. Also, there was a thread on this forum ridiculing the President for expecting BP to pay idled American deep water oil workers while the safety of this type of exploration is more thoroughly evaluated, but the President secured $100 million from BP for these workers and their families.

I realize President Obama always has been and always will be reviled on this site but any fair minded person would have to agree that the President has really stood up for the American people and protected their interests and he should be appreciated for that.
