So do you really want to keep SS alive? Here is something to think about and this is only based on it it accually is kept around and no means testing is put in place.
If you had retired around 1980, you would have recieved all the money you (including your employer) put in with in a few short years. However, because most if not all on this board are still working today and years away from retirement, you need to live well into your 90s if you plan on seeing every dime put into this socialist program. Remember, that's not taking into account the fact it's now in the red. Also, that doesn't take into account higher increases leveled on you to try and right this sinking ship. Furthermore, if the money was put into your own private account, your payout would be 5 times the current amount each month and when you die, whatever is left over you get to will it away instead of the government keeping it.
Knowing that, do you really think we should keep this ponzi scheme running when you know, you're being taken to the cleaners and you'll never get all your money back?

The only reason I don't want it to go away is because if it does, then do I get ANY of MY money back that I've already put into the system.
FYI, if you're in your 40s, chances are you already aren't going to see a dime of that money as it stands. The ponzi scheme has collapsed but the majority of Americans don't realise that fact.

Howler Id say most of us already know we are screwed no matter how long we have paid into it. At age 39 I know damned well Ill never see a dime of it back. SS is probably the biggest successful robbery in the history of mankind..

Simple, anyone who is retired today and anyone close to retirement has been voting to kick this can down the road for decades. They have been refusing to face this coming collapse. The end of the road is here now. Time to stop kicking the can. Means testing gets implemented today and that includes those already retired. The level at which one gets SS through means testing gradually increases until most in their 40's will never see SS. In exchange for this, those in their forties will be allowed to divert a small portion to their private accounts. This amount will increase through the years. Those in their 30s and younger are out. Their money goes directly into their private account and what has been paid into SS is gone. So, if you're in your 40s, you are getting screwed the most but someone has to take the abuse. The payoff is that you get to save your grandkids from this rip off system down the road.
