Default What you get for your tax $$$

The following was on Forbes.com
I have family who works at GM and my dad and sister are both retired from GM.
Neather felt that we the tax payers should have had to bail GM out from their own stupidity.
Sad that your givin a second chance and this is what we get,GM has four of the worst made chrysler/Dodge has two on the list, and Ford who took NO money from o'l Sammy only has one still not great but maybe if GM had only one or better none, then they like Ford wouldn't have needed our MONEY

From FORBES.com

If you want to drive something dependable and long-lasting, steer clear of these vehicles.

Unfortunately just because GM's cars are selling well now doesn't mean they're the best bet for durability or value -- yet. It'll take awhile before GM's new direction shows up in tangible new products at the dealership.

Four of the seven vehicles on our list of the worst-made cars on the road come from GM brands. And all of the cars on the list -- including Chrysler's Dodge Nitro and Jeep Wrangler -- are made by Detroit's Big Three. Only one car on the list is made by Ford Motor (NYSE: F).

It is so sad that America has come to a place where as we reward STUPIDITY and IRRESPONSIBILTY!!!!!!!!!

If we continue this way of thinking,we are DOOMED!
We have to get back to taking personal RESPONSIBILITY for our own actions, good and bad and until we do we will never recover from our mistakes.

It is interesting to note that Toyota manufactures some of their vehicles here in the US. Notwithstanding the much bally-hooed Toyota recall, I'm guessing they are still rock solid and dependable cars, compared with GM/Chrysler/Ford vehicles. Thus, it isn't the American worker who is to blame for the quality differential -- else Toyota would not manufacture cars here in the US. This leads me to believe there are management errors in Detroit.

I'm not an expert on this and am merely speculating. But I'm going to speculate even so. One thing I believe is a Detroit error is to base their designs on the principle that their customers buy new cars every four years. Give it some thought. If you buy a new car every four years, you drive your car out to about 80,000 miles maybe 90,000 miles and you are then buying a new car. GM/Chrysler/Ford vehicles are maybe fairly reliable over the first 85,000 miles. Its what happens after 85,000 miles that has left a bad taste in my mouth and maybe in the mouth of other Americans. My experience has been American cars begin to self-destruct beginning around 90,000 miles. Expensive repairs become more and more common. It is a no brainer that it is time to dump these cars if you have managed to get it to 100,000 miles with little investment in replacement parts.

So, if you accept that principle that your customers buy new every 4 years, building in greater reliability is a waste. Not bad reasoning. But I think their achilles heel is some people want more out of their vehicles than 4 years of service and 90,000 miles. I got 182,000 miles out of my 1998 Toyota Corolla which I then gave away to my son who is in college, and he is continuing to drive it. I found that it still got 36 MPG on the highway on a road trip last summer. Let's see a Ford escort or some other inexpensive small commuter car from Detroit do that. And let's see them do that without expensive repairs to keep the vehicle going.

My 11 year old Saturn is doing fine. Oh yeah, Swallowed up Saturn, producing cars that were GM clones instead of original designs, then they dumped them.

Just got my 05 Dodge diesel out of the garage. 2200 bucks worth of ball joints, u-joints, rotors, shoes, replaced rear seals etc etc etc. You would think in this age that Detriot would of put grease fittings in places where they were when I was a kid. Any rate with 94k on it's clock, it hasn't had any other major problems in the first five years. Hopefully it's good for another 94.

Did your lift pump go out yet? My 04 is in the shop right now getting a new one. Ball joints and wheel bearings on the right side were done last year, but running 37's doesn't help with that...

Your crazy jeepkid. Nobody at my age puts a lift kit and 37's on anything we own. We get that hign up and the air is tough on our lungs. Besides I have a hard time seeing the road ahead of me now, that's why I have my wife telling where to turn all the time.

Yeah its a little on the big side, thinking I'll probably go with 35's next time around...

and get your lift pump upgraded before it takes a dump and leaves ya stranded in the woods, it will go out sooner or later...I've never saw one go past 100k...

I'll replace the pump at the end of summer, before heading to Colorado in the fall.
