I just read in the paper that almost 50% of Americans didn't pay any income tax in 2009. They got it all back in their returns. It is due to all the tax credits etc that are currently available. The same article said that a couple with two kids and a $50,000 income would pay no taxes. I can't understand why Obama wants to hit wealthier people so hard with taxes....they are already paying all the taxes now! That just takes away any incentive to be creative and ambitious. Why work hard when ol' Sam has his hand so deep in your pocket?
That's the whole point. The top 2% of wage earners pay over 80% of the taxes in this country. There is no incentive to get up and off your butt to better yourself when they know Uncle Sammy is going to give it to them.

It's all about power. The power to create the dependent class of people who will always elect the "elite" into office. With trillions of dollars going to Washington, that comes with a lot of really nice perks when lobbiest and such come calling for that money to be spent on them and/or their cause. I paid enough taxes for an entire welfare cell. Unfortunately, the closer that number gets to 50% the truer the axiom about freedom going down the tubes after people find they can vote themselves $$$$.

There is plenty incentive to get up and become weathy. The wealthiest people in this country make their money through passive income. The rich people of this country pay a lower tax rate than 90% of the people on this forum.

Actually Rich, the bottom 50 make up 13% of the income and pay nearly 3% of the Federal Income Tax. What hits them hard is the tax on everything from a bottle of Coke to a gallon of gas. With the prospect of a VAT, and higher Utility costs down the road, the conforts of life will cost them a bit more, and make their lives a bit more challenged.

I'm all for the VAT tax (National Sales Tax)at the expense of the income tax. Put an end to the income tax permantly by repealling the 16th and I say bring it on. The problem with what is now on the table is that it will be closer to 20% and the income tax. The ironey here will be the trolls that came and went along with a few who claimed the national sales tax wouldn't ever work in this country. I say, are you sure? It's about to happen.
