Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Not the answer I expected!

I recently went into my family doc's office yesterday for some poison oak I got and while I was sitting there I asked him in a neutral kind of way what he thought about the health care bill that was just passed. I didn't expect him to tell me what he did. He told me he didn't get into medicine just for the money. He said he thinks everybody should be able to afford health coverage. He said if he loses a few bucks its no big deal. At that point I didn't have much to say other than "yeah, since losing my job I didn't get into taxidermy/landscaping/custodial just for the money so I can afford to give some back too NOT!

Now my brother in law is a emergency room doc too and he is going ballistic over this health care reform.

Teachers make the same claim just before they go on strike for more money.

sounds like to me health insurers have 30million new customers coming, which means doctors have 30 million new paying customers, I don't think doctors will be hurting in that regard.

Cousin got out of medicine though due to mal practice insurance doubling every year for like 3 or 4 years straight, so what was 10k/yr say, became, 20, became, 40, became 80k, just 3 or 4 years later, he claims he was forced out, wasn't worth it anymore.

The middle class is eroding, hard working americans are working harder and longer for the same income, the rich are getting richer.

Not according to the man that just signed the bill into law. He made a victory speech claiming 30 million new people will be going on Medicaid. You know don't you Medicaid stiffs the doctors by paying only 2/3rds of their bills don't you? Second, The majority without insurance did so by choice. Does this legislation really change their minds? An IRS without the power to force anyone to pay a fine for not having health insurance?

Cool

I think a good bit of the high cost of "health care" here is explained by the fact that we have the best "health care" in the world.

On the other hand I think there are a couple or three points we might keep in mind when considering the cost.

1- Is it really necessary that physicians make as much money as they do? I think my obstetrician is an excellent physician and genuinely cares about me. But he could be just as good driving a Chevy instead of a BMW.

2- How many of us are aware that those huge lawsuit awards we complain about are awarded by juries, not by the lawyers.

3- Maybe we should go back to thinking of it as "health insurance" instead of "health care." Honorable husband does not need Viagra, yet, but he says if he ever does, he believes he should pay for it himself.

DLG, you hit well on #2 and #3 but gagged me on the very first one:

Yes! The market place should always set the amount of pay anyone should recieve in compensation.

Yes, your crotch doc does genuinely care about you.

You should be glad he is driving an American built car like a BMW. Folks in SC are very happy. It's great driver for relieving stress. After all, the last thing you want is a stressful doctor delieving your baby.

FYI, I learned not long ago, your crotch doc must carry insurance for 18 years after he retires. WTF? It's to protect him from lawsuites until the very last brat he delivered reaches the age of 18. Can anyone else confirm this? Perhaps one of our Docs that visit or lawyers.

That's because if my dog ever needs a surgery that's in the thousands instead of 100s, he will be put down by me using a 50cent bullet. Unfortunately they frown on that sort of treatment when it comes to the wife. Just kidding folks!!!!!

DLG is correct, of course, in that we SHOULD be talking health INSURANCE, not CARE.
Other than that, I discount it...a person should be able to make as much money as he wants to make, and it is nobody's business to apply jealousy to the fact that one makes more than another. The MARKET USED to determine that....I remember as a kid, the physician made house calls, and it cost $25. This guy was wealthy too....but he did not have to give up 1/2 to 2/3 of his annual income to pay insurance premiums for malpractice. I disagree it's the juries...it's the LAWYERS and it's the LAW that ALLOWS such awards, which inflates the cost of health insurance.

And that B.S. story the doctor told his patient about not being in it for the money...well...an institution no less prestigious than THE MAYO CLINIC announced this week that it would stop taking medicare insurance to pay for it's services. THEY must know something the idealogues won't admit. Doctor Wing-Nut will change his tune when he sees how much he's being screwed out of, just because his customers are on the government plan....I expect he'll squeal just as loudly as a teacher's union rep just before the strike....heheheh....things change when your pockets are empty.

as a PS...I have recently been in and out of hospitals for the last 5 months and HAVE YET TO HEAR A SUPPORTIVE RESPONSE from ANY of the medical practitioners there, regarding the Health Insurance laws being passed. As a matter of fact, they're pretty darn pissed off about it ! So doctor deep-pockets can get on his high horse and start donating his time and services to the poor if he truly feels the need...but he won't because IT IS about the money !
