Default My bird feeder

On my property I have many oak and pecan trees, which are home to quite a bit of pretty birds. Cardinals, Finches, Jays, etc. etc. This last winter was a little harsh, so I decided to put up a bird feeder to help these birds make it through the winter. I put out the feeder and filled it every day. After a week or so of doing this, I figured how much feed was needed to serve this community of birds. I set aside a budget that would pay for a year’s worth of feed. All went well and the pretty birds would come feed and fly back to the top of the trees when they had their fill. After a while, I noticed a bunch of Grackles had moved in. They would throw the food around, looking for just the good bits, leaving the rest on the wet ground to spoil. They bullied and ran off all the other birds and over burdened the feeder. I could barely keep up with the feed. Toping it off two or three times a day. I did so, to insure that the other birds might get a chance at the scraps left behind by the Grackles. This did not happen. Not only did the grackles over burden the feeder, but also polluted the food by craping in it. I still insisted on keeping the feeder full and clean. Filling it and cleaning it several times a day. This turned out to be an act of futility and had me spending all my feed budget in the first three weeks. Still, I insisted on keeping food out for the pretty birds, who needed the help. Before long, I noticed the squirrels started to move in. The squirrels would climb into the feeder and eat the sunflower seeds, craping/peeing on all the other seeds. Not only did they pollute the feed, they started destroying the feeder. After a while of watching the squirrels and Grackles fight over the feeder, I noticed there was nothing in my yard but bird crap, scattered feed, and a chewed up feeder parts. I also noticed that the original birds were long gone. My budget ended up three times what was needed by the needy birds, and all I got for the effort was a bunch of crap and a broke budget.

Shoot the grackles. Eat the squirrels. Your songbirds will come back.

(And, I do understand the analogy. My advice remains pretty much the same. )

Nope. I said shoot the grackles. Grackles are a type of blackbird, though... their color had nothing to do with why I'd shoot them. The Jays were among the birds he was originally helping.

Damn grackles sit in the tree's waiting for a hand out on my feeders. They are slowly disappearing???????????????? Last year they were all over our back yards and were found on the ground dead. They had the DNR come out in case it was a poisining issue. Should have seen the loks I was getting for doing something about grackles taking the feed!
