A high school prom in northern MS has been cancelled because a female student was not allowed to bring her female date. The same student requested permission to wear a tux to the prom and that was nixed too. The ACLU was involved, of course.
JACKSON, Miss. – A northern Mississippi school district will not be hosting a high school prom this spring after a lesbian student sought to attend with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo.
The Itawamba County school district's board decided Wednesday to drop the prom because of what it called recent distractions but without specifically mentioning the girl's request, which was backed by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The student, 18-year-old high school senior Constance McMillen, said the cancellation was retaliation for her efforts to bring her girlfriend, also a student, to the April 2 dance.
"A bunch of kids at school are really going to hate me for this, so in a way it's really retaliation," McMillen told The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson. Calls to McMillen by The Associated Press late Wednesday went unanswered.
Basically another kid who obviously didn't get enough attention growing up.
Itawamba is a pretty big county, but very rual. The kid attends the largest school in the district, and they have already had a problem earlier in the year with a male student who wore high-heeled boots, makeup, and a dress to school. Not sure, but I think that kid was sent for a mental evaluation.
It seems that the parents--at least the ones who care--are setting up a private prom for their kids to attend.
Looks like the kid got just what she wanted--lots of attention. Probably the absolute worst thing that could have happened.

Proms are worthless events anyway. They were just an excuse to loose the virginty, if it is was still intact by then.

I think you are wrong... Constance McMillen said she didn't want to go back the day after the Itawamba County school board's decision, but her father told her she needed to face her classmates, teachers and school officials. "My daddy told me that I needed to show them that I'm still proud of who I am," McMillen told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "The fact that this will help people later on, that's what's helping me to go on."
I think if she wanted attention she would have wanted to go back to class... Her fellow students already knew she was a lesbian. It is the school that dragged all the attention.

Public schools are terrified to "offend" anyone these days. Is there a rule against cross dressing? Lesbians? While I dont condone it if theres no statute against it then they cant do anything about it.
If she hadn't wanted the attention, she could have simply arranged to meet her "date" there, rather than announce she was coming with a date of the same sex. I think they are classmates, but if they aren't it wouldn't be hard to figure out how to arrange it.
Yeah, I'm sure the school loves the attention of the ACLU. There's a tiny segment that's been trying to stir up trouble there for a while now--not somthing you'll find out from the news, but common knowledge if you live here.
Poor, poor victim. So, what's next? Male principals bringing 8 year old boys as dates? Girls bringing farm animals as dates?

I don't know if there are any "statutes", but the principal etc. can do something about it as long as it's a school sponsored function and held on school property. Just like they can enforce dress codes, etc.
