The military has had the "don't ask..don't tell" policy in place for quite some time now. I don't presume to know how well it works. Is it a violation of a gay person's rights? Some think so. I'm still trying to settle the issue in my own mind.
I do believe this: Certainly, women should not have to shower in front of a bunch of heterosexual men. The reason for that is obvious. It cannot be denied that those men would harbor some thoughts and passions toward those women. It would be unfair and demeaning to those women.
In the same way, should men have to shower in front of homosexual men? Wouldn't the homosexual men harbor some
similar thoughts and passions toward them? Wouldn't that be unfair and demeaning toward those men?
One could also reverse the scenario in other ways.
Increasingly, men and women are serving together in close quarters. I recently read that women are going to now be allowed to serve alongside men on nuclear submarines. Those in the gay community are also seeking more openness in regard to their orientation.
After talking with a few in the military, I understand that the only place where communal showers are required now is in basic training. If we overturn "don't ask...don't tell", in recognition of gay rights...are we then violating the privacy rights of the far larger heterosexual groups?
Perhaps the simple answer is to just build more showers?
i do not like the idea of gays serving in the US military, period. i was in a small unit that had two gays in a very short period of time. One was really openly gay and he is the only guy in the world who i can call a &ueer because i caught him in the act. The unit CO and 1st. Sgt came from the same unit in the US as the twinkie and they refused to press charges. Morale in that unit went totally to hades in a short period of time.
It is a little known fact that much of the military in the US is no longer under Don't Ask, Don't Tell because of an appeals court ruling.
A pressing legal reality for the "don't ask, don't tell" standard for gay people serving in the military is that the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has already struck down the way it's practiced in much of the Western United States.
The 2008 ruling, while largely overlooked, would force the military to apply a much higher threshold in determining whether a service member should be dismissed for being gay.
The government declined to appeal the ruling by the three-judge panel, which leaves it standing as law in the nine states covered by the court. That means gay military members at bases in the West technically have greater protections than their colleagues across the world.
A person orientation is their own business. It is not to be shared with peers while in the Military.
Ya wanna be a "Homosexual" in the Military, keep your mouth shut, and follow the rules set out by your superiors. In all other places of "business", be they public or private, Hetero and Homo sexual people work side by side every day. They have no business knowing who is gay and who is not, nor is it right to say that because you are gay that you deserve special considerations.
Be an adult, mind your own business, and keep your mouth shut.

I kind of like this method however, what works in civilian life doesn't necessarily apply to the military. If someone makes an off color statement or advance at work the worst that happens is getting smacked or fired. In the military it affects unit cohesion which gets people killed. It doesn't matter why or whether it's "fair," only that it's life or death and effects the security of the country.

It sounds like you are in favor of continuing the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that is currently in place. In some ways, I am inclined to agree. It has worked in the past, so why change it?
There are some things I will never completely understand. I don't go around announcing my sexual orientation. You are right, such things are private....they are nobody's business. Yet, I constantly see homosexuals announcing their orientation. All three of my children attended private Christian colleges. Such things were not an issue there. Upon graduation, one of my children opted to get a Master's degree from a State University. As I walked through some of the buildings there, I was amazed to see how many faculty members had signs or images on their office and classroom doors which informed everyone of their orientation. I have seen rainbow bumper stickers. I have seen bumper stickers which praise the the homosexual lifestyle. I don't ever recall a bumper sticker or a sign on someone's door which proclaimed that they were heterosexual.
Why not just find a gay bar and shut up? I get tired of hearing it.
A party was held last night where someone I know attended. A public school was the topic of conversation. Some who work there told stories of what went on there. Apparently kids are allowed these days to make out in the halls even... When someone asked why it was allowed the respondent said they'd have to stop everyone if they stopped...
I can't believe any of it's allowed but I know why. Sexual deviance is the problem and all forms fall under it not just... All forms including the form of watching it happen.
People that are obsessed with advertising their sex lives have a mind controlled by it. Knowing your thinking about their sex lives is part of the deviance.

Just shows how much the moral decay of society has become. Just look at the trash on T.V. see the reality shows the kids are watching today. Hollywood with the liberal influence they brings our kids is ruining our country. I'm so glad I don't have little children growing up today, I feel real sorry for my grandchildren having to grow up in times like this!
I've seen a good bit of the news on this topic and to be honest, Im not sure what they are trying to accomplish with this bill. Right now its DADT which most gay activist groups say is unfair. So if they change it so you can be open what does that mean exactly?
Do they want rainbow uniforms and to be pointed out as different then most of the other folks serving? I honestly do not understand what they are trying to accomplish or why having everyone know about what you do in your personal life is so important.
Its seems that if you ask most people in military or not a general question when you first meet them like "Tell me a little about yourself".
Most people will say -Im a contruction worker, Im a DR, Im a truck driver, Im a mother of 4, Im a Repub, Im a Dem etc... but some folks will label themselfs with their sexual orientation 1st before anything else. They seem to want to throw that in your face for a reaction. Im not sure why labeling who your are by your sexual orientation is the best thing to do. I think it underminds those folks a bit and they just dont seem to realize it.
I really don't care if folks are hetro or homo but why throw it in everyones face just for some attention.
