Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Reasons to own a Firearm

Police Cannot Protect And Are Not Required To Protect Every Individual

The courts have consistently ruled that the police do not have an obligation to protect individuals, only the public in general. For example, in Warren v. D.C. the court stated "courts have without exception concluded that when a municipality or other governmental entity undertakes to furnish police services, it assumes a duty only to the public at large and not to individual members of the community."

Former Florida Attorney General Jim Smith told Florida legislators that police responded to only about 200,000 of 700,000 calls for help (28.57%) to Dade County authorities. Smith was asked why so many citizens in Dade County were buying guns and he said, "They damn well better, they've got to protect themselves."

The Department of Justice found that in 1989, there were 168,881 crimes of violence which were not responded to by police within 1 hour.

Currently, there are about 150,000 police officers on duty at any one time to protect a population of more than 250 million Americans or almost 1,700 citizens per officer.

Kennesaw, GA. In 1982, this suburb of Atlanta passed a law requiring heads of households to keep at least one weapon in the house. The residential burglary rate subsequently dropped 89% in Kennesaw, compared to the modest 10.4% drop in Georgia as a whole.

And yet, there are those, including a few on this forum, that believe that stricter gun laws, and fewer guns will help in reducing violence.

I own 5 operable firearms, three rifles and two shotguns, which I use for hunting and target shooting. I suppose they could be used for home defense, my Remington SP-10 Magnum 10 gauge auto-loading shotgun loaded with 3 1/2 inch #00 buckshot shells would be a particularly fearsome weapon at close range, but I am not sure it is practical. Under California law firearms must be unloaded and stored in a locked safe when not in use. Though I should probably time myself and even regularly practice opening the combination lock on the vault, removing the SP-10, loading it with three rounds of buckshot and be in a position to fire I have not ever done this. I am not sure I could do all this in the time it would take an armed intruder to kick in the front door of my house.

I realize that it is unlikely I would ever be caught by the police if I kept the SP-10 loaded next to my bed but having a loaded unsecured firearm in the house raises safety questions that also make me uncomfortable.

Right on, brother! I relished former Secretary of State Condolezza Rice witnessing about her father keeping a shotgun for protecting his family from racist attacks in the deep south in the 1960s. Why would blacks or other minorities ever favor confiscation of guns or reduction of their access to guns? Aren't the underclasses the least likely to receive timely police protection and also most likely to NEED timely police protection and hence most in need of individual firearm ownership to protect themselves? Do they really believe that the gangstas who are doing the drive by shootings and other shennanigans are deterred from obtaining fire arms by gun control laws? I don't think so.

Has anyone you ever knew needed or used a gun to defend themselves(military and police excluded).

Keep in mind that I am in no way the tiniest little bit in favor of removing guns from law abiding citizens hands.

I just get a total charge out of the VERSUS channel and their personal defense TV and other shows teaching you how to defend yourself. I guess, better safe than sorry is good, but funny that there is an industry there.

Must be the good neighborhood i live in where my front door is open about 50% of the time.

Growing up in a tiny rural town in KS., we did "tornado drills" in school on a regular basis, BUT I never new any kids that ever were in school during a tornado.

It's called, being prepared. Some people like to be prepared for the un-planned occurances that happen in life.

Because you have never needed, no one needs. Great logic. I guess your doctor, lawyer, NASA scientist, and politician freinds you speak with all the time, or I should say, when you get time off from you gazillion dollar business you run, tells you this????

Just for your information, My sister inlaw was abducted, raped, beat, and left for dead. She now carries a pistol. If she had been carrying back then, the story would have been much different.

I was born and raised in South America. And many people were victimized simply because they had no means to protect themselves. The victimizers knew it and took advantage of it. When I moved to the States, I lived in a ghetto while going to college. I had been robbed and my house broke into on several occasions. I soon bought me a shotgun. One night while studying, I heard my window break, back in my bedroom. I picked up my shot gun and went to investigate. I saw a man in my bedroom, who was apparently on drugs. He charged me, I pulled up the gun and he stopped. I screamed at him and he jumped back out the window. Just by me having the gun, I was protected. If I had not had that gun, he might have killed me. I am a short man, 5 foot 4 inches, and he was rather large, he could have killed me or hurt me rather easily. I think it is wrong to make jest of a topic simply because you have not had to engage in such an act.
