TX US congressman Charlie Wilson was the driving force behind the successful plan to assist the Afghan Mujahideen in repelling the Soviets from their country. "Charlie Did It."
"America has lost an extraordinary patriot whose life showed, once more, that one brave and determined person can alter the course of history." — Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, longtime CIA career officer and former CIA director.
So... does Charlie get a pass on the excessive drinking, cocaine use, and hookers because he was in the Navy?
Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: Charlie gets a pass because that famous Texan, Wya Bush, was given a pass for doing the same kind of stuff. Unlike Bush, Charlie never claimed to be chuck full of something Bush called "family values."

I guess I understand, although, to be fair, it appears that Bush did that stuff while still pretty young, and quit when he grew up, which, arguably, was a bit later in life than for most of us, and, after that early period of his life ended, his "family values" at least appeared to be reasonably intact. On the other hand, it appears that Charlie was doing hookers and coke in Vegas hotel rooms on the public dime long after he was old enough to know better, although, I understand your point that Charlie was a WYSIWYG kind of guy...
Yep, no doubt Charlie was a serious rounder. Saw him interviewed on TV for
the documentary last year. One night just before a scheduled Afghan trip he hit a car in ther rear on the Woodrow Wilson bridge-drunk, of course.
Charlie knew that if he hung around the cops would charge him with driving drunk
and the Afghan trip would be off: So he left the scene of an accident and squared it away after the Afghan trip was over. Sure must be nice to be a rich and famous congressman.
I remember his trips to Afghanistan with his well endowed and gorgeous girlfriend. She had all the local warlords goggle eyed.
