I don't mean this or aim it at either party because IMO neither party has done much to stem the flow of jobs out of this country. This brings me to wonder just how many jobs will ever come back. Are we producing anything that will bring jobs back? Will the Job market get better when we buy everything made oversea's? How do we increase trade while not producing anything to trade? Why do we import things that we should be making or growing here? Why do we import food?
How do you folks see things shaking out in this area? Just a few simple questions, I am not blaming all of this on the Dems so you chime in too Will. If you can do the same that is.
James, I was looking at something one day in the store, cant remember what and its not really important, some type of clothing i believe.Anyway, they had racks of stuff and everything made in the USA was considerably higher priced than anything made in other countries.
It was for work and I was gonna destroy it anyway wearing it so I got the cheaper made in China version. But it got me thinking.
How is it that something can be manufactured halfway around the world, get shipped halfway around the world, handled by a couple dozen different people in the process, trucked halfway acrossed the US and still be cheaper than a comparable item made and shipped a few hundred miles from me?
Im not saying the Made in the USA brand was overpriced by any means, but how the hell do you compete with prices like that and still be able to pay employees a decent wage and overhead on a business escpecially while the govts raping you for more money any time you get slightly ahead.
Honestly, we just cant compete IMPO and still make a decent living.

The jobs will never come back because the political criminals in DC do not want them to come back. You can't compete with .50 cents an hour. We had no problem when nearly everything we used was made in this country.
Really strange that all of the shills who whine, cauterwaul and cry about socialism in the USA have no problem with sending our jobs off to communist China. They talk a good line about something they call "free trade." Strange that the scurrilous hacks never use the term "fair trade".
Every subsequent recession will be longer and deeper than the last because more and more manufacturing jobs are going off to that wonderful communist paradise, China. China is subsidizing much of the crap that comes to the US in violation of fair trade agreements. They are getting away with it because the political pukes in this country have sold us down the toilet. We are circling, circling and pretty soon we will be down the drain.
Well Obama said the other night that we are going to DOUBLE our exports...I'm just wondering who is going to buy our expensive products??

I think that if we get enough power in the hands of Union LEADERS, we may see a drop in Our wages big time. These are complex problems to say the least. It is getting harder all the time to see a way out of this mess. The bigger the government gets, the lower our quality of life will be.
I can see a point in what Falcon says, Do they really want jobs to come back or they wanting to control the people even more with barely enough to get by for everyone. If we get a one world economy, our standards have to drop like a rock, OR all other countries standard must come way up. How would you bet between those two scenarios?
I'm a jogger. A while back, I went looking for a new pair of running shoes. Do you think I could find a pair that were made in the USA? Nope. I was looking for a mountain bike last year. Same deal. Most recently I wanted to buy a new pair of work boots....you guessed it. Chinese. A few months ago, I installed a new half bath in my house. I went looking for an oak vanity. Never paid much attention on that one, but when I got it home, I discovered a "made in Taiwan" sticker on it. In Wally world and all the dollar stores, almost everything is from China.
You asked, "How is it that something can be manufactured halfway around the world, get shipped halfway around the world, handled by a couple dozen different people in the process, trucked halfway acrossed the US and still be cheaper than a comparable item made and shipped a few hundred miles from me?"
I guess it must be American wages. I can't see much other reason. Those people will work for next to nothing. If all this keeps up, wages in the US will stagnate until there is world-wide parity in wages. Then the standard of living may start to rise again. Additionally, foreign manufacturers don't have to meet all the strict environmental standards that we do here in the US. It's cheaper to do business overseas.
You stated, "Im not saying the Made in the USA brand was overpriced by any means, but how the hell do you compete with prices like that and still be able to pay employees a decent wage and overhead on a business escpecially while the govts raping you for more money any time you get slightly ahead."
Beats me....especially when most people in this country (even among conservatives) think that the government ought to provide all the services they have come to expect. The government has to suck more money from everyone to keep that up. Right now, there is plenty of talk about taxing the rich...you know,.. those folks who work to earn and who then invest and create jobs. The reality is..their numbers are limited. The time will come shortly when there will be middle class tax hikes...and plenty of them. They may call them a fancy name such as value added revenues or something of that sort...but they will come. As baby boomers retire and age, they will remain a political force to be reckoned with. No politician who wants to be re-elected will dare vote to cut SS or medicaid programs. And of course, there are all those who work for the government...in the federal govt, state govt, county govt, city/local govt, and in public schools. Just suggest cutting among their numbers! The fact is....the providers are now outnumbered by the takers. Not a good scenario. In a continually booming economy, that can all be perpetuated, but historically, the economy has always been cyclical.
I have to wonder if the ever-increasing standard of living we have seen from one generation to the next will still be possible as we go forward.
I had the misfortune of visiting the Mall of America on a trip to the VA in Minneapolis. Talk about a Chinese outlet store. The whole place made me sick. You could not pay me to ever go back to that place.. I bet there were more people in there than there is in Western ND.
I was looking for a new pair of pliars a while back at Menard's, after looking through ALL of them, I found only one made in the USA the Channel Lock.
Manufacturing in America is increasing and has increased close to 4% for the last 6 decades. That is a fact. We still make 75% of the items we consume here at home. Furthermore, companies that do offshore things keep the goods offshore to a tune of 95%. Our jobs aren't going overseas as much as they are being replaced by automation. What took 1000 workers in 1950 to produce only takes 200 workers. What should we do, outlaw robots? How many Toyota workers are now idle due to the gas pedal issue? I think it's 20k in America. How can that be if we don't manufacture anything here? What about the gas peddle itself? It's designed and manufactured right here in the USA. That's what I heard on the news the other day right before the NTSB annouced they were looking into other makes of cars.

I guess most of the consumer goods I buy are in the 25% that aren't made here. Either that...or I just have to travel a lot further to find American made versions of those items. Of couse most of our food still originates here, so I presume that is part of the 75% you mention. I don't doubt your statistics, but perhaps the 75% includes items the average consumer doesn't purchase much of. For instance, high tech items come to mind. Autos are an item that may be assembled here, but many of the parts are made elsewhere. Electronics are a big business in America. The average guy buys a lot of those gadgets, but most are made somewhere else. Nowadays most clothing items that ordinary people buy are made somewhere else too. At least that is my experience. But I don't seek out expensive clothing items..I'm old now and don't care what I look like!
