Politics Nothing goes with politics quite like crying and complaining, and we're a perfect example of that.

Default Poverty: People Who Make Too Much and Give Too Little

I attended a conference recently in which poverty and it's causes were discusses. One lady in the conference goes up to the white board and writes for her reasoning, "people who make too much and spend too little."

Well, I believe my path to becoming a republican may have happened then and there. It was appalling to me that this lady believed the single most contributing factor to American poverty is people who have jobs not giving enough.

Poverty can be caused by many, many different things (generational, situational, etc.), but to get up there and place the blame solely on others? Unreal.

Thoughts?

JFK probably said it best when he said "A rising tide raises all boats." Rich people often employ poor people and trying to "find the roots of poverty" is a liberal's dream. The only thing the lady at your conference was successful in finding was her misplaced guilt was eased a bit by her "benevolent" beliefs.

I remember hearing a radio guy talk about poverty as not being a problem, or "the problem" but a side effect of the real problem...basically a separation of the classes. He or the author went on to talk about the classes, and how essentially for most of history there has been the elites, and the impoverished.

Basically people rarely choose to be in poverty, but rather, lack of jobs, or low paying jobs, etc...etc...

When you do think about people making 100million dollars a year some years, etc...when the avg salary in the US is $50k/year? lots of reasons/problems out there...

Hey Wahoo, welcome back. I missed your posts. Before we get to the quick response ( have to ask), who is #1 in the ACC?

Get this book and read it. It was very eye opening. I learned a lot of new and neat things about culture going back hundreds of years. Black Rednecks and White Liberals by Thomas Sowell. You won't be disapointed.

On a side not, how is school going for you? Are you done or almost there?

I think she had it backwards. One of the many contributers to poverty is spending too much, and making too little.

I grew up in a military family, and we never had a whole lot of money when I was a kid. I remember making the comment about a family we went to church with who owned a business, and they were what I considered rich at the time. I made a derogatory remark around my mom one time about whether or not they deserved it, and I was quickly scolded. She told me to always be happy for people who do well, because they give hope for everyone else. She then said that God blesses in many ways, and that I should talk to him about it. That made a lasting impression on me. She was right. How depressing would it be to not see others around us doing well? How much hope would there be for us to do well If there was no hope.

Anyway, that is my daily devotional for the day. I usually don't do it, but I thought it was fitting.

I just heard on Fox that Obammy's tax increase is for those rich people making 85 K... What an idiot! Talk about taking care of the middle class, maybe in Kenya where he's from 85k is rich!

The chances someone will end up poor is highly correlated with a low IQ. Most poor people have IQs at least one standard deviation below the mean. (In the U.S. mean IQ = 100 with a SD of 15). People with an IQ two standard deviations below the mean have practically no hope of avoiding poverty. On the other hand people with an IQ one standard deviation above the mean are rarely poor and those with an IQ of two standard deviations above the mean are never counted among the poor. There are probably genetic and environmental factors that determine IQ but the fact is that once one reaches adolescence IQ remains very stable throughout adulthood and no effective interventions have been found to significantly increase it.

I have to give my honest opinion on poverty and the poor. Here is what feeds poverty, uneducated, low IQ, being born into poverty and no drive to succeed. I am not college educated and by no means an honor student in school. Consider this; about a year ago I go t laid off from a good paying 65k a year job after 6 years there. I had to get something so I went to work as a janitor (night). I have to tell you that most I work with are not rocket scientist (uneducated & IQ comment). Second, not a one I work with really came from any family that was well off (born into it). Most are just happy breathing and surviving (no drive) most are good people. Now of coarse this does not apply to all but most.........................

In the interim while working there I have started a lucrative landscape and property maintenance business signed a 65k contract + residential work, do taxidermy (only deer heads) and made 15k just off breeding dogs last year. I am set to make well over what I made at the job I was so upset about losing a year ago, BOO WHO WHOA IS ME. I was up at 6am everyday passing out door hangers for landscaping, going to the local butchers\sporting goods stores and putting out fliers for taxidermy work. I took all the money I made and reinvested it into advertising, equipment and such for all my businesses. This is why I get pissed when I hear about taking from the rich and giving to the poor.

I took an IQ test and I am right smack in the middle at average. So I make up for it in drive and being greedy J
