I don't think it was "foot-in-mouth," and I think it was a totally OK comment. We have heard the phrase "being color blind," in terms of race/racism, and it is a positive term. I interpret Matthews comments along those lines. Doesn't seem bad to me.
Edit: The fact that Matthews is a liberal hack, fawning over Obama and his every utterance bothers the crap out of me, though.

I view it as a condescending liberal who thinks everyone but him is a racist and as Fieldmouse wrote, in earlier times he'd probably own one or two and think nothing of it. Frankly he's an oblivious arrogant uber-liberal sycophant.
